Paul Smith
Sports Information Director

The University of Arkansas at Monticello Boll Weevils (2-0) placed four players in double figures, led by Nate Newell’s (Sr., Monticello, Ark.) 25-point night as the Weevils cruised to a 99-71 victory over Central Baptist on Wednesday night in Monticello.

The Weevils jumped ahead early, pushing ahead by nineteen (34-15) after a Torre Doty layup with 7:32 remaining in the opening half. UAM held CBC at arm’s length the remainder of the half, going into halftime with a 47-34 lead.

UAM pushed the lead to as many as 30 (87-57) after a Vincent Jackson (Fr., Fordyce, Ark.) jumper with 4:09 remaining in the game, and held on for the 28-point victory.

Newell’s 25 points tied CBC’s Trad Williams for a game high. Joining Newell in double figures for UAM were Torre Doty (Sr., Austin, Texas) and Ryan Nelson (So., Rochester, Mich) with 19 points apiece, and MJumbe “J.B.” Williams (Sr., Compton, Calif.) with 15 points.

Doty snagged a game-high nine rebounds, and Newell dished out eight assists.

The Weevils shot 49.3 percent from the floor on 36-of-73 shooting, including a 48.6 percent clip (18-of-37) from three-point range.

DOTY’S BIG NIGHT LEADS WEEVILS PAST LEMOYNE-OWEN

Torre Doty (Sr., Austin, Texas) exploded for 36 points to lead the University of Arkansas at Monticello Boll Weevils (1-0) to an 87-83 victory over the LeMoyne-Owen Magicians in the Weevils’ season opener Saturday night at Steelman Fieldhouse.

The Magicians jumped out to an early lead, opening the game on a 6-0 run, but the Weevils pulled ahead 7-6 on a Doty jumper with 16:39 remaining in the opening half.

The two teams traded leads over the next several minutes, but the Weevils took the lead for good (37-35) on a three-pointer by Jacob Sheffer (Fr., Brinkley, Ark.) with 6:34 remaining in the half. The Weevils pushed their lead to as many as eleven before LeMoyne-Owen narrowed the lead to seven (49-42) at halftime.

The Magicians cut into the UAM lead early in the second half, narrowing the Weevils’ lead to one (51-50) after a Taurean Moy three-pointer, but the Weevils once again got hot, pulling ahead by eleven (67-56) after a Torre Doty layup.

LeMoyne-Owen once again fought back, pulling to within one once again after a jumper by Jihad Sharif, but Nate Newell (Sr., Monticello, Ark.) hit a clutch three-pointer with 2:54 left, and the Weevils would hold on for the close win.

Doty’s 36 points were a career best. Newell and J.B. Williams (Sr., Compton, Calif.) both added 18 points in the victory. Ryan Nelson (So., Rochester, Mich.) chipped in a team-best six boards.
