The University of Arkansas at Monticello
debate team received 19 awards, including second place in the debate
sweepstakes and third overall, at the "Red River Swing Tournament"
hosted by LSU-Shreveport and Louisiana Tech November 10-12.
UAM received a strong performance by team co-captain Joel Brown of
Monticello, who received five individual speaking awards. Brown placed
seventh in extemporaneous speaking, third in informative speaking, and
third in pentathlon. He reached the final 16 in varsity debate and
placed eighth in the pilot competition, which recognizes students who
excel in both individual
events and debate.
Other competitors included Colt Roan of Crossett and Nicci Norton
of Woodlawn, who reached the finals of the novice debate competition.
Roan was named second place speaker in the novice division. Also in
novice debate, Shiann Ryals of Dardanelle reached the
quarterfinals while Jon Craven of Monticello was in the final 16.
In the varsity debate competition, Chris Halley of North Little
Rock received the fourth place speaker award after reaching the final
16. In open debate, Brooke Flemister was a quarterfinalist. Also
contributing to the effort where Cassidy Gavin of Monticello, Lauren
Raynor of Covington, Tenn., Kate Kelly of Monticello, Whitney Romans of
Crossett, and Lori Andrews
of DeValls Bluff.
According to Scott Kuttenkuler, director of forensics, this team
"is really working hard and getting better with each tournament. If they
keep focused on the goals that they have set for themselves they will be
hard to keep up with."
The team's next tournament is at Mississippi College in Clinton,
Miss., December 1-2.
