Cell Phone Theft Surges on Campus

Lori Andrews
Staff Writer

Students continue to find their cell phones stolen after various activities across campus. These activities vary from lounging in dormitories to intramural games.

This year, six cell phones have been reported stolen to the campus police. These cell phones mostly consist of phones valued from $200 to $350. Graduate Assistant of Bankston Dormitory Will Patterson had his cell phone stolen during a flag football game.

Patterson owned a Motorola Sliver valued at $350. He had the phone hidden in his extra shoes.  When he realized his phone was missing during half-time, he called himself from a friend’s phone. After about three calls, the phone was turned off.

Eric Mays’s blue Motorola Razor was also stolen during the game. Mays and Patterson canceled their services before the game ended. At least one other phone was stolen during the game, all of which were reported to the campus police.

The thieves buy an inexpensive cell phone and plan, steal an expensive cell phone and put their SIM card into their newly obtained phone.

No leads have been made of the thieves’ identities.

“Keep it with you,” Patterson said, regarding advice on cell phone protection.

Julie Gentry has had several phones stolen at intramural games and in the Gibson University Center Gymnasium. The thieves have been so bold as to steal a phone inside a student’s truck.
