Staff Writer High school football coach Grant Taylor, played by Alex Kendrick, never had a winning season in his six years as head coach at Shilo Christian. Life turns worse for Taylor when his star running back transfers school, school boosters plot to have him fired as head coach and poverty threatens his marriage and life. After losing the first three games of the season, Taylor turns to God to help fix his life and through him miracles happen that change the lives of everyone on the team. “Facing the Giants,” a low-budget film that looks like a low-budget film, uses an inspirational message to overshadow some of its many flaws. The underlying theme, “For with God all things are possible,” gets beaten into the ground by the end of the movie. The movie preaches more than it entertains; so, moviegoers without Christian beliefs need to be advised. As
a football movie, “Facing the Giants” fails miserably. Although the
action shots during the games are more realistic than movies like
“Friday Night Lights” and “Varsity Blues,” they are not very
entertaining. It uses every football cliché and is predictable to
the end. As a sermon, “Facing the Giants” motivates Christian followers to put all faith into God’s hands. As a movie, it fails to entertain. Have a comment? Please e-mail us. ©The Voice 2006 Revised 01/13/2008 03:13:21 PM — http://www.uamont.edu/Organizations/TheVoice/4_10/review.htm |
