Nov. 18 - The Foreign Language Club sponsors Hispanic dance lessons, including the tango, salsa and others, Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon in the Southeast Arkansas Education Service Cooperative located at 1022 Scogin Dr. Club members and their friends and family are invited to attend. Those who would like to join the Foreign Language Club can pay $2 dues to the club adviser Isabel Bacon or a club member.

Nov. 20 - University of Arkansas – Monticello student nurses sell $1 chances to win a $200 Wal-Mart gas card. Proceeds from the drawing will help finance their pinning ceremony. To purchase chances, contact any junior or senior nursing student.

Nov. 20 - The Student Nurse's Association sponsors a presentation on Sexually Transmitted Diseases Monday at 6 p.m. in Horsfall Hall. Free food and giveaways will be offered to those in attendance.

Through Nov. 20 - The Ambassadors are sponsoring a Thanksgiving food drive. Items collected will be donated to the Veterans of Foreign Wars food bank for use in Drew County, which is currently “empty” and in great need of items for the holiday period. Organizations, groups, offices and individuals should bring non-perishable items to the Office of Admissions on the first floor of Harris Hall, or call 460-1026 to have an Ambassador come for them.

Fewer than 5 percent of healthy Americans who are eligible to donate blood actually donate each year. Although 56 days represents the required interval between whole blood donations, all donors who donated at the last campus blood drive will be eligible to donate Nov. 29. Nov. 29 - The Chess Club hosts the 2006 UAM Chess Championship. Chess players at all levels in the University community and beyond will converge on 316 Babin Business Center at 3:30 p.m. Wednesdays or Thursdays beginning Nov. 29 to play in the four-round Swiss System tournament. The Open Section winner will gain the title of 2006 UAM Chess Champion. Recognition will also be granted to the best Novice (someone who has not played in a tournament before), and to the best player below the age of 18. Chess sets will be provided or bring your own. Nov. 30 – Students perform in Music building’s Harris Recital Hall beginning at 12:40 p.m.

Nov. 30 - Members of the Economics of Environmental Management class present survey results on biofuel attitudes and usage on the Monticello, McGehee and Crossett campuses at a University Seminar Nov. 30 at 12:40 p.m. in the Agriculture Building Auditorium. For more information, contact Bob Stark, associate professor of Agricultural Economics, at 460-1414.

Through Nov. 30 - The Ambassadors are coordinating a campus campaign for the Drew County United Way. The Monticello campus representation is part of the actual Drew County effort to assist such organizations as the Salvation Army, Drew County 4H, Girl Scouts, Holmes Chapel Tutorial, Humane Society, Senior Citizens, Red Cross, Special Olympics, Literacy Council, and the Family and Children’s Fund. Faculty and staff can make a payroll deduction for the 2007 year until Nov. 15 on the pledge cards sent to your campus mail. Students and organizations can make pledges in the Office of Admissions on the first floor of Harris Hall. You can also send individual donations to Mary Whiting in the Office of Admissions, with checks made payable to the United Way. A silent auction will be held Nov. 15-17 with gifts available for early Christmas shopping. Donation jars will be available on campus Nov. 1-15. Please plan to support the United Way campus campaign. Bob Ware, vice chancellor for the UAM COT-McGehee campus, was named Man of the Year at the McGehee Chamber of Commerce Banquet Nov. 16.

Katherine Taju (Sr., Panama City, Panama) made the Daktronics All-South Central Region First Team less than two weeks after being named the Gulf South Conference-West Division Player of the Year.

The Creative Society meets Thursdays at 12:30 p.m. outside the Patio Café. Do you like to write, draw, paint, sing, make stuff, or just be around creative people in general? If so, you should join the Creative Society! Anybody with any interest is welcome to come by and check it out. We are looking for a band or musician to play intermission and help us get Mocha Madness started. We also need people to help us make refreshments and set up before it starts.

The Student Activities Board meets from 12:40-1:30 p.m. in the Gibson University Center House Room on the second and fourth Thursdays of each month. Drew Country Writers meet on the third Thursday each month in the First Presbyterian Church library at 6:30 p.m. Members must produce tangible evidence that they write, though they may not have published at this point.

ARK-LA-MISS Biofuel Boom - Members of the Economics of Environmental Management class seek input on biofuel attitudes and usage on the Monticello, McGehee and Crossett campuses. The project has been accepted for presentation at the American Farm Bureau Convention in January 2006.  Please complete the short survey form. Canned Tree Food Drive - Student Programs and Activities will collect canned food to donate to the Monticello Food Bank. On Thursday, Dec. 7 from 10 a.m. – 2:30 pm in the University Center Green Room, each organization will make a “canned tree” out of the canned goods they have gathered. Each organization is responsible for raising their own cans as well as storing their cans until Dec. 7 when the trees will be built. The trees will be judged based on creativity, size of the tree and individuality. The winning organization will win $50! If you have any questions, please, feel free to contact Lindsey Kight at 460-1396. Entry forms were placed in the organizations’ boxes in the University Center. If your organization does not have a box in the University Center, you may call Lindsey Kight to sign up. Entries are due by Tuesday, Dec. 5 at 4:30 pm.

Phi Beta Sigma seeks donations of coats and toys for the needy for the Christmas Holidays. If you have anything to give, find a Sigma on campus or call Joel Dyer at (870) 692-2408.

Spring Musical - The Division of Music will present the musical "Fiddler on the Roof" in Spring 2007. In addition to many solo roles, the show requires a large chorus. We need singers, dancers and those that do both, to make the show a success. Chorus members need to be able to sing, but the music is not difficult. In addition, there are some non-singing roles available as well. If you are interested in a major role you will need to audition; however, to be in chorus you just need to contact Kent Skinner, director of Choral Activities. Auditions will be scheduled for later this semester, with rehearsals scheduled from 2-4 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. The Grant Institute's "Grants 101: Professional Grant Proposal Writing" Workshop will be held at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, Dec. 6-8. Interested development professionals, researchers, faculty and graduate students should register as soon as possible, as demand means that seats will fill up quickly. All participants will receive certification in professional grant writing from the Institute. Call for Papers - The English department at Baton Rouge Community College invites submissions from faculty and graduate students to its annual spring writing conference, "Writing Matters: An Exploration of the Diverse Nature of the Composition Classroom." Papers and panel discussions are welcome in all areas relating to the composition classroom, including technology, cultural diversity, teaching methodology, interdisciplinary approaches, and writing across the curriculum. Deadline for submissions, which should be a maximum of 200 words, is Monday, Jan. 15, 2007. Selected participants will be notified no later than Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2007. The conference will be Saturday, April 14, on the Baton Rouge Community College campus (breakfast and lunch provided), with a pre-conference performance Friday, April 13, followed by a reception for conference-goers. We will announce our exciting performer and guest speaker very soon! Early registration is $25 for faculty, $10 for graduate students/adjuncts/retired faculty. Book Exchange - There has been a great response to the Book Exchange, the new service provided at the library located near the current newspapers. Used books are being donated almost every day and have provided a variety of leisure reading materials. If you need a good book to read over the Thanksgiving break, come check out what we have to offer. Books from the book exchange do not have to be checked out. Just take a book you would like to read, and either bring it back when you are through, or bring a replacement if you can. It's as easy as that!

NASA Means Business Student Competition 2007 - This year's topic employs NASA 's space exploration mission in the promotion of science, technology, engineering and math education among middle and high school students. University students from a broad range of backgrounds are invited to employ their skills in this capstone program to design and develop:

    * A NASA STEM Education Promotion Plan, and
    * Flagship promotion projects in the form of digital video, print media, and Internet media productions.

Students studying engineering and natural science, advertising, marketing, communication, radio-television-film, journalism and other similar professions are encouraged to form  multidisciplinary teams. Read the Competition Guidelines posted at http://www.tsgc.utexas.edu/nmb.

Scholarship Opportunities

The Arkansas State Communication Association offers a $500 scholarship and a one-year complimentary membership each January to a sophomore, junior or senior majoring in communications in an accredited four-year college. Requirements include:

  • 3.0 overall GPA
  • previous high school participation in ASCA Speech Tournament
  • Filling out application
  • Submitting two letters of recommendation, including one from college adviser and one from high school forensics/competitive speech/debate coach
  • 250-word essay on provided topic

The Elie Wiesel Foundation for Humanity offers an essay contest yearly. Scholarship awards from $500-$5,000 are offered. Eligibility includes:

  • Full-time undergraduate junior or senior student; 
  • Completed essay of 3,000-4,000 words, according to foundation guidelines, from topic choices including ethical aspects of a major literary work, film or piece of art; relationship between religion and ethics in today’s world; reflection on the most profound moral dilemma you have encountered;
     
  • Faculty sponsor for completed application and essay.

The Morris K. Udall Scholarship and Excellence in National Environmental Policy Foundation awards 80 merit-based $5,000 scholarships each year to outstanding college students who intend to pursue careers related to the environment, or who intend to pursue careers in Native American health care or tribal public policy and are Native American or Alaska Native. Faculty may nominate current sophomores or juniors, who have a minimum 3.00 grade point average, are committed to the mission listed above, and are U. S. citizens or permanent residents. For the purposes of the scholarship program, a Native American or Alaska Native is any individual who is:

  • A member of an Indian tribe;
  • A descendant in first or second degree of a member of an Indian tribe;
  • Considered to be an Indian;
  • An Eskimo or other Alaska Native;
  • A permanent U. S. resident who is a member of the First Nations of Canada.
Applicants must submit relevant documentation. For additional information regarding nominating students, please contact Mary Whiting, director of admissions. The deadline for nominations is Feb. 1.

The Arkansas Press Women offer a $1,000 scholarship to a student planning a career in journalism or mass communications. The applicant must be entering his/her junior or senior year in the 2007-08 academic year. Applicants must complete the written application, provide an official transcript, submit three letters of recommendation and three communication/journalism/broadcast samples, and write a 400-word or less statement of professional goals. Apply by March 1.

Get a guaranteed two-year ROTC Scholarship worth over $26,000. Army ROTC is looking for qualified students to participate in this summer's Leader’s Training Course, a 28-day adventure course worth six college credits. Free round-trip transportation, meals and lodging included. Requirements include:

  • U.S. Citizenship
  • Between 17 and 30 years old
  • Enrolled in college full-time in pursuit of a baccalaureate or advanced degree and have at least two years remaining in school
  • Cumulative GPA of at least 2.0 on a 4.0 scale
  • Meet military medical qualification standards
  • No civil convictions (unless waiver is approved)
  • No more than three dependents (unless waiver is approved)

ROTC Scholarship Requirements:

  • U.S. Citizenship
  • Between 17 and 30 years old
  • Cumulative GPA of at least 2.0 on a 4.0 scale
  • Completed 60-80 hours toward degree
  • Meet military medical qualification standards
  • Be physically fit
  • Be a Scholar-Athlete-Leader

Note: Non-scholarship juniors, seniors and graduate students who enroll in ROTC under the Alternate Entry Option will receive a $9,500 stipend for the last two years of ROTC. Age waivers are available for qualified students. Starting salary for a Second Lieutenant is over $32,000 and approximately $50,000 in four years. Great medical, dental and housing benefits. The ideal candidate will have excellent research writing skills in both MLA and APA, enjoy working with students, have a keen eye for editing, and have completed Advanced Composition and/or Advanced Grammar with a “B” or better. Assistant Football Coach - The University of Arkansas at Monticello seeks applicants for the position of an Assistant Football Coach. This full-time, non-tenure appointment begins immediately. The University of Arkansas at Monticello is a member of the University of Arkansas System and is a multipurpose institution offering quality educational opportunities in the form of master’s, baccalaureate, and associate degrees. The University competes in NCAA Division II and the Gulf South Conference and has an enrollment of approximately 3,000 students. Responsibilities include assisting the head football coach in assignments relating to the football program, recruiting qualified student-athletes; and other duties as assigned by the head football coach. Coaches of football/teachers of physical education must have a background of teaching and competitive coaching experience. A master's degree is preferred. Social Work Field Instructor - The University of Arkansas at Monticello seeks applicants for a Social Work Field Instructor (Master’s degree) or Research Assistant (Bachelor’s degree) as part of the Academic Partnership in Public Child Welfare. UAM, one of the 11 campuses of the University of Arkansas System, is located in southeastern Arkansas in the beautiful timberlands, rich in outdoor recreation activities, and approximately 100 miles south of Little Rock. Secretarial Pool - The University of Arkansas at Monticello, with locations in Monticello, Crossett and McGehee, is seeking applicants for its secretarial pool. This pool entails Secretary I, Secretary II and Administrative Secretary positions that may become vacant on campus. The Secretary works under general supervision and has various responsibilities for keyboarding and providing administrative and clerical support to supervisory and professional staff. Minimum qualifications include a formal education equivalent of a high school diploma. Secretary I requires one year of specialized training in the secretarial field plus one year of clerical experience. Secretary II requires one year of specialized training in the secretarial field plus three years of experience as a secretary. Administrative Secretary requires two years of specialized training in office administration, secretarial science or related field plus two years of secretarial experience, including one year in a leadership capacity. Secretary I is Grade 11 with entry level of $16,676. Secretary II is Grade 13 with entry level of $18,903. Administrative Secretary is Grade 14 with entry level of $20,140. Official Degree Audit - If you are seeking a baccalaureate degree and you have earned between 60 and 90 hours, you should meet with your academic adviser to complete a signed degree audit for your chosen major and minor (if applicable). Once you reach the 90-hour point, you will be unable to register for classes until a signed audit is on file in the registrar’s office. If you’d like to know the status of your degree audit (whether one is on file or not), please contact the Registrar's office at 460-1034.

Web Safe Color Chart - Computer Information Systems Professor Jim Roiger constructed a Web page that shows the 216 Web-safe colors and their RGB codes. These colors will look exactly the same on all computer systems and monitors. The WWW Consortium recommends using these colors with the most recent compliant Web standards for XHTML, XML, CSS, DOM and EMCAScript (standard javascript). Open longer in the afternoons - Due to popular demand, the Writing Center will remain open Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Friday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Please remember to plan ahead if you need help with a paper. It takes time to tutor a student. Tutors are trained to help students plan, organize and edit papers. Planning to graduate in August or December 2007? Fill out and submit a graduation application to the Registrar’s Office, Harris Hall 102, by Feb. 28, 2007. Find applications on the campus homepage, http://www.uamont.edu, by choosing the Current Students option, clicking on Registrar, clicking on Graduation Information, clicking on appropriate application, then print it, fill it out and submit. Unsure of when you may be eligible to graduate or if you are eligible for an Associate of Arts degree? See your adviser to review your degree audit.

Empty the Trash - Old e-mails placed in the “Deleted Items” folder remain on the university server until the folder is emptied, which may slow the operation of your computer. Right click your mouse on the “Deleted Items” folder and choose empty “Deleted Items” folder. This will permanently remove the old and unwanted emails from the e-mail system.

The Office of Finance and Administration keeps a formal log of vending machine problems on the Monticello campus. All coke or snack machine problems should be reported to Sharon Bulloch at UAM extension 1023 or e-mail bulloch@uamont.edu. In addition to providing the location, please indicate if the Coca Cola machine contains cans or bottles when reporting problems.

Visit the Fred J. Taylor Library and Technology Center on the Monticello campus from 8 a.m.-10 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Friday, 1-4 p.m. Saturday and  2-10 p.m. Sunday.

The Patio Café now takes phone-in orders at 460-1376 Monday through Friday for lunch (11 a.m. – 2 p.m.) and dinner (4 – 7 p.m.). Visit the Web site for menus and prices.

Get a cup of Joe at Java City! The coffee shop inside the Taylor Library and Technology Center opens Monday - Friday from 7 a.m. - 3 p.m., and from 5-9:30 p.m. Sunday - Thursday. For more information, call 460-1876 or visit Java City online.
