Ordinance Moves Smokers Outside

Local restaurants moved their smoking sections outside or got rid of them altogether due to the new smoking law.

Act 8, the “Clean Indoor Air Act”, took effect July 21 banning smoking in the work place. Due to the new ordinance, many college students’ favorite hangouts became smoke free zones.

“Smoke is dangerous and it smells bad,” said Grace Akin, a first-year student. “Some people are allergic to it, and it’s hard trying to eat with smoke making me sneeze and cough.”

The smoking law applies to students on campus. The ordinance requires smokers be at least 25 feet from the building. Campus police enforce this law by writing tickets.

“I understand the rights of non smokers because I used to be one," said Dorothy Bowen, a junior. "I don’t understand why there can’t be designated areas for smoking. If you’re a non smoker and you don’t want to be around smoke, don’t go in the smoking areas.”
