4th and Long

Buford Lamb and John Kloap
Sports Columnists

Welcome back sports fans for another fantastic year of sports at UAM. We here at the 4th and Long team are going to provide commentary on all the sports going on at UAM and around the world.

What a difference a year makes. The Weevils lost to the SAU Muleriders 18-15 on Saturday, Aug. 26, a vast improvement over last years 52-21 loss to the same team.

The 4th and Long team watched the game at Panther Stadium and the team looked awesome. While the team improved by leaps and bounds since last season, the quarterback position shows some instability. We aren’t saying that our current quarterback Elijah McDonald doesn’t do an awesome job, but there seemed to be ducks flying out of the backfield on occasion.

The receivers look great this year, especially Jamie Dunn and Tim Harris. The running backs really pounded it in the middle with John L. Williams and Devlin Shipp sharing carries and yards.

Of course we can't forget to send out some love to the offensive line. The guys who get hit every down are a lot better this year. We know McDonald thanks them, too. These improvements to the offensive line made the job much easier for all of the running backs and the quarterback.

The 4th and Long team talked to Gwaine Mathews, UAM’s football coach, after the game about their loss to SAU.

“What cost us the game was two defensive breakdowns. The first was that pass over to (the visitors sideline) to (D.D. Holyfield) and the second was the winning touchdown pass,” Mathews said.

We here at 4th and Long are looking forward to this season, and with a little improvement to the quarterback position, we could be one of the topped ranked teams in the GSC.
