Most college students are familiar with financial burdens. Fortunately, many Monticello businesses understand the plight of the broke college student.

Several businesses across town offer UAM student discounts. Whether dining out, looking for entertainment or shopping, UAM students can save with their student identification cards.

Demetria Allen, a first-year student, said, “We don’t get enough (student discounts).”

Heather Pittillo, a junior, said, “They should have a list available for students of places that offer discounts.”

Both students said they would go to more businesses if they knew about which ones offered discounts.

Jim Whaley, Dad of the local coffee shop Dad’s Place, said, “If Monticello is ever going to be a true college town, then we as business owners must do whatever is necessary to bridge the gap between the town and the university.”

Students can save 10 percent on all purchases at Dad’s Place with a valid UAM ID card.

Students can also save 10 percent at the following restaurants: Topp’s Pizza (except on specials), the Captain’s Table, La Terraza, Mazzio’s Pizza (except on buffet), Kentucky Fried Chicken and Sonic Drive-In.

Western Sizzlin' offers a 15 percent student discount. Coming soon, The River will offer a lunch special of 10 percent off between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m.

The Stone Fox offers a $2 discount on haircuts, a $5 discount on chemicals and 10 percent off all hair products. The Studio offers a 20 percent discount, and Shear Design offers a total of 40 percent off. The Kaleidoscope offers a 10 percent student discount on tanning.
