Most college students are familiar with financial
burdens. Fortunately, many Monticello businesses
understand the plight of the broke college student.
Several businesses across town offer UAM student
discounts. Whether dining out, looking for
entertainment or shopping, UAM students can save
with their student identification cards.
Demetria Allen, a first-year student, said, “We don’t get
enough (student discounts).”
Heather Pittillo, a junior, said, “They should
have a list available for students of places that
offer discounts.”
Both students said they would go
to more businesses if they knew about which ones
offered discounts.
Jim Whaley, Dad of the local coffee shop Dad’s
Place, said, “If Monticello is ever going to be a
true college town, then we as business owners must
do whatever is necessary to bridge the gap between
the town and the university.”
Students can save 10
percent on all purchases at Dad’s Place with a valid UAM ID card.
Students can also save 10 percent at the following
restaurants: Topp’s Pizza (except on specials), the
Captain’s Table, La Terraza, Mazzio’s
Pizza (except on buffet), Kentucky Fried Chicken and Sonic
Drive-In.
Pizza Hut offers students a medium one-topping pizza
for $5.99 and a large one-topping pizza for $7.99.
Wendy’s offers 10 percent off on all combos. Western
Sizzlin' offers a 15 percent student discount. Coming
soon, The River will offer a lunch special of 10
percent off between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m.
Students can also save at several beauty and tanning
salons.
Modern Images offers a $5 discount on highlights,
shampoos and cut and styles. Hair Works Salon and
Style Innovations offer 10 percent off on haircuts.
The Stone Fox offers a $2 discount on haircuts, a $5
discount on chemicals and 10 percent off all hair
products. The Studio offers a 20 percent discount,
and Shear Design offers a total of 40 percent off.
The Kaleidoscope offers a 10 percent student
discount on tanning.
Students can use their ID cards to save at several
department stores and gift shops as well.
All Occasions Flowers & Gifts, City Drug Gift Shop,
Keepsakes, Payless Shoe Store, Briant Music Company
and James’ Quick Print and Photography offer 10
percent student discounts.
The Town & Country Florist offers a 10 percent
student discount on fresh flowers, and Cooper’s
Jewelers offers a 5 percent discount on products not
more than 20 percent off.
Coonzan’s offers an oil change, tire check, lubes,
fluid check and filter change for $23.50 – for a
total of $1.50 in savings. The Timber Lodge Bowling
Lanes charges students $2.25 per game, while the
Hollywood Cinema
charges students $5.50 admission
Sunday through Thursday (except on matinees). The
local women’s athletic club, Curves for Women offers
60 percent discount on the final fee.
