Whoa! It's Wandering Weevil Wheels!

The Voice Staff

Imagine jumping on a bike at the Science Center and riding to the Agriculture Building, parking it on the bike rack and going to class. Now imagine someone coming out of class, jumping on it and riding it to the University Center.

They’re not stealing your bike; they’re just getting exercise.

It’s not a dream. It’s Wandering Weevil Wheels, where the campus community can use the bicycles anytime they want to go anywhere they want as long as the bikes return to campus. Campus-bound students could ride to the bank or grocery store and back. Others might want to take a ride for some exercise, or maybe just a cool breeze.

The Monticello Police Department agreed to donate bicycles to the University of Arkansas at Monticello Aug. 30. Police Chief Tommy Free showed campus representatives approximately 30 bicycles stored in the bottom of the old Post Office. While some of the bicycles only have frames, others look nearly ready to ride.

“We want to do everything we can to work with UAM,” Free said.

Everyone will know a Wandering Weevil Wheels bicycle when they see it after the Creative Society finishes painting the bicycles. Creative types interested in painting the bicycles should contact Creative Society adviser Gary Marshall, professor of speech, at 460-1947 or marshall@uamont.edu.
Associate art professor Tom Richard said the Art Club can also help.

“We’ve got the paint,” he said.

The bicycles range in size, makes and models. An exact count will be determined when the bicycles are picked up Sept. 8. At that time, the bicycles will be tested to determine what needs to be fixed, such as gears and tires. Any bike repair person willing to donate help should contact Ronald Sitton, assistant professor of journalism and Journalism Club adviser, at 460-1138 or sitton@uamont.edu.
