The Center for Economic Education at the University of Arkansas at Monticello and the Arkansas Council on Economic Education (ACEE) recently conducted a one-week economic education workshop at Stuttgart High School for teachers in grades K-12 entitled "Economics and the Environment: A Natural Connection."

Dr. Marsha Clayton, director of the UAM Center, led the workshop, and the ACEE funded it. Ann Taylor of the Lincoln School District, Deborah Shearer of the Pulaski County Special School District, Dr. Tom Woodruff of the Rogers School District and Adrian Knapper of the El Dorado School District conducted curriculum group sessions and group activities.

The UAM Center for Economic Education is one of six university centers for economic education in Arkansas. The centers are affiliated with the Arkansas and National Councils on Economic Education and are designed to assist public and private K-12 teachers in preparing students to better understand the American economic system and make sound economic decisions.

The ACEE provides resources and training to public and private K-12 teachers in Arkansas, offering extended workshops during the summer, one-day workshops during the academic year and in-service workshops for school districts in their service area. The ACEE also maintains a library of National Council for Economic Education curriculum materials. One hundred and sixteen Arkansas school districts are formally affiliated with the ACEE EconomicsAmerica program.

Twenty-three K-12 teachers participated in the workshop, which included sessions on environmental economics and essential economic concepts as well as methods for integrating economics and environmental economics into the K-12 curriculum.
