Why not Resources |
Contributing Writer Many students wonder how to survive while in college. Although you hear the same ol' saying “there aren’t any jobs,” in actuality there are. Many students as well as non-students say that immigration and businesses moving overseas contribute to the unemployment rate, or basically, not being able to find jobs. Although these concepts may contribute, immigrants make up a small percentage of the total population. I worked with a guy once that had this theory that illegal aliens were taking all of the jobs. When I observed this theory, illegal aliens get the jobs that we think are too labor intensive, or jobs we are just too lazy to accept. Do not get me wrong, we live in an area with fewer jobs, but there are jobs available. Being a college student means being broke. Many students set their eyes on getting rich overnight, but we all know that is unrealistic. I questioned a student who chose to remain anonymous, and I asked did he work. The student replied no. I followed up by asking if he could not find a job, and he said “I have had plenty of opportunities to work in fast food, but that’s not my type of work; besides, who wants to work for minimum wage?” This particular student’s attitude is a reflection of the way that a lot of students feel. Jobs are out there; we are just too picky. The saying “you must crawl before you walk” still holds true. Although it may not be the field that you want to stay in, we sometimes have to settle in order to better ourselves in the future.
