Third in Web Design --- Members of the UAM student chapter of the Society of American Foresters received third place for outstanding student chapter Web site at the SAF national convention held in Fort Worth, Texas. All five students are part of the UAM student quiz bowl team that reached the quarterfinals of the SAF’s national academic quiz bowl competition, held in conjunction with the national convention. UAM defeated teams from the University of Missouri and the University of West Virginia before falling to Virginia Tech.

Nov. 17-18 - The 2005 Hot Springs Documentary Film Festival will show films in the Fine Arts Center.

Nov. 18 - The Cell Biology class and Medical Sciences Club will travel to the University of Tennessee Health Sciences Center.

Nov. 19 - The NAACP annual Freedom Fund Banquet begins at 7 p.m. in the U.C. Capitol Room. Ticket Donations: $15 for students, $20 for adults. Guest speaker: Rev. Hezekiah Stewart (Pastor of Moody Chapel, Little Rock - Watershed Ministry).

Honors

Chancellor Jack Lassiter appointed Linda Yeiser as vice chancellor for Advancement. Yeiser previously worked as the university's vice chancellor for Finance and Administration until 1999. She worked for the past three years as assistant director of Development-Foundation Relations at Stephen F. Austin State University in Texas.

The Writing Center
   The Writing Center, located in the Arts and Humanities building, helps UAM students with computer and writing work.
   The Writing Center offers Internet research help and program help for programs such as Microsoft Word.
   The Writing Center helps students with brainstorming ideas for papers. The Web site offers grammar quizzes to help students with grammar.
   The Writing Center opens Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m.

Walk, jog or run your way to a GREAT STUDENT (FACULTY/STAFF) BODY and earn a FREE T-shirt! Walk, jog or run 50, 75 or 100 miles by the end of the Fall semester and be well on your way to having a physically fit, "GREAT" Student Body. Participation is open to all current UAM students, faculty and staff. Mileage must be completed by Dec. 16. Miles completed on treadmills, stairmaster, etc. count toward total miles. (Athletes may NOT count miles completed as part of their practice.) Sign up in the Intramural Office (lower level - University Center). Participants are required to record their weekly mileage on the official chart in the Intramural office.

Meetings

Nov. 16 - The UAM Chess Club will meet Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. in Room 303 of the Babin Business Center.

Nov. 17 - Phi Beta Lambda will hold a meeting at 12:40 p.m. in 120 Babin Business Center. 

Nov. 20 - The criminal justice club meets Tuesday at 12:30 pm in MCB 207.

The Alpha Chi Student Honorary conducts regular business meetings for members only during the activity period (12:40 p.m. – 1:30 p.m.) on the second Tuesday of each month. 

Baptist Collegiate Ministries serve lunch Wednesdays at noon. First-timers eat free and everyone else eats for $2. Proceeds benefit summer mission trips and other activities.

Missionary Baptist Student Fellowship meets Thursdays at 7 p.m. at the MBSF Center (near the tennis courts).

The Social Work Club meets the first Wednesday of each month.

DREW COUNTY WRITERS - Drew Country Writers seek new members with a professional attitude and the commitment to publish. Members must produce tangible evidence that they write, though they may not have published at this point. Nov. 17 - Deadline to buy candles from a Phi Beta Lambda member.

The CIS club (aka Chi Iota Sigma) is collecting non-perishable food items to be donated to the Drew County Food Pantry for Thanksgiving. It's also collecting coats and jackets in good condition. These will go to an area church, which takes care of cleaning and distributing them to the community. The Library is currently hosting an exhibit for Sigma Tau Gamma Fraternity. For more information about scheduling a time for an exhibit for your student organization, please contact Mary Heady at heady@uamont.edu.

Planning to graduate in August or December 2006? Fill out and submit a graduation application to the Registrar’s Office, 102 Harris Hall, by March 1, 2006. Unsure of when you may be eligible to graduate? See your adviser to review your degree audit. December 2005 and May 2006 graduation applications are still being accepted and should be submitted as soon as possible.

UNITED WAY - The Fall 2005 United Way Campaign continues through Nov. 21. Interested individuals or student groups wishing to participate should contact Mary Whiting at 460-1026 or whitingm@uamont.edu.

CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL PILLOW DRIVE - The UAM Ambassadors are sponsoring a pillow drive for the Children's Hospital. The Children's Hospital provides a small "travel" pillow to all cancer patients. Generally, this has a pillowcase (new or home-made) pinned with a small note indicating who is providing it and offering "special thoughts." The patients bring their "special" pillow to each treatment or hospitalization. Currently, Children’s Hospital is completely out of these because of the large number of patients. Any individual or organization can donate one or more pillows in the Office of Admissions until Nov. 15.

Recycle Your Rechargeable Batteries! - If it's rechargeable, it's recyclable! Just drop off your recyclable batteries in the Physical Plant Office and they will be recycled. For more information, call 460-1018, visit www.rbrc.org or call 1-800-8-BATTERY for the drop-off location nearest you.

ORGANIZATIONAL DISPLAYS – The library hosts displays of student organizations. For more information, contact Mary Heady, Special Collections Librarian, at 460-1080 or via e-mail at heady@uamont.edu.

The AWS Foundation has announced several scholarship opportunities for students studying welding technology, engineering or associated careers. These opportunities exist for both undergraduate and graduate programs. Application deadlines range from Jan. 15 to March 1. Complete details and applications are available at www.aws.org/foundation.

The Arkansas Governor’s Commission on People with Disabilities awards several scholarships each year. Pick up applications in the Office of Admissions on the first floor of Harris Hall. Deadline for application submission is Feb. 27, 2006. Eligibility for consideration includes:

  1. Completed application;
  2. Documented disability, including completed medical form in the application;
  3. Letter of good standing;
  4. Three letters of recommendation;
  5. Official transcript.

Blackboard bought WebCT, the campus' course management system, with the deal expected to become final sometime in January 2006.

Spring break dates listed in the UAM Catalog 2005-07 for spring 2006 and spring 2007 have been corrected in the online catalog to reflect the following: spring 2006, March 20-24 and spring 2007, March 19-23.

UAM's new master plan is available for viewing on the University Home page.
