As Fall Ends, Basketball Begins

The Most Thrilling Part of It All ...

Will Collins
Sports Editor

Well as the Fall sports seasons comes to end, neither the volleyball nor the football teams look forward to being involved in any type of post-season play. But you can be certain that calming of the weather, the daylight savings time and the decline of gasoline prices will all have their parts in the upcoming recruiting seasons of each sport.

Cross Country teams will even have to figure out another direction to seek success.  The men finished 12th in conference and the ladies trailed out of the woods in 16th position for the year.

With Volleyball's premier season hanging in limbo to whether or not they can have a 10-game win season, a winning season is what they will not be accomplishing this year. However, the Blossoms sit right now with a 9-16 overall record accented with a 4-9 conference-only record. The first time they played Southern Arkansas University, they were victorious by winning in four games. As they await the arrival of the Lady Riders Friday night at the Steelman Fieldhouse, the 7 p.m. start should be one of the most anticipated ones of the year. With the last game of the year being a home contest, players are expecting a win.

"We should win because there is no pressure," says junior right side Pam Grano.

On the other hand, after the 56-7 loss to UCA, the football team will be holding their hands out to welcome Delta State for its last game of the season. The Weevils are standing on a 1-9 season record with this being the last contest of the year.  The last time the Weevils posted a one-win season occurred in 1970, but in the late '90s there were seasons worse than that.  The Weevils have played Delta State 26 times and have only won five of those. The last time the Weevils won was in 1996, when Coach Tommy Barnes led the troops into Cleveland, Miss., and won the battle 41-34.  Last season the Weevils were handled by the Statesmen in a 62-41 loss.

As all of the fall seasons close, the more-than-exciting basketball seasons open with eye openers.  The Blossoms will be traveling to Baylor to play an exhibition with the Lady Bears who are currently the NCAA Division I National Champions.  The Weevils have contests against LSU, Cincinnati and Northern Michigan.  With games like that coming up, both teams are surely to raise some eyebrows even if the men were picked fourth and the ladies picked fifth in each team's respective pre-season polls.
