The University of Arkansas at Monticello will begin offering a minor in military science beginning with the 2006 spring semester as part of an Army Reserve Officer Training Corps program hosted by UA-Pine Bluff.
The new program was announced at a joint meeting between UAM, UAPB and Army officials on the UAM campus.

"This is a program (which) has been requested by a number of students and one that we're very pleased to be able to offer," Chancellor Jack Lassiter said. "This provides an attractive option not only for those considering a military career but also for those in the Guard and Reserve who are interested in officer training."

The military science minor, which includes a summer camp requirement between the sophomore and junior years, may be obtained in as little as two years with graduates commissioned as second lieutenants. Students in the program who are already in the Guard or Reserve will be non-deployable until they finish the program.

UAPB will serve as the host program as designated by the Army until UAM has enough ROTC students to serve as a stand-alone host, according to R. David Ray, provost and vice chancellor of academic affairs.

As part of the ceremony announcing the addition of the military science minor, Monticello sophomore Jedidiah Duncan became UAM's first ROTC cadet.

"This is a significant addition to our academic offerings," Ray said. "The option of becoming an officer in the military while obtaining a college degree opens up a number of opportunities for our students."
