Johnathan Holland scored 20 points as the University of Arkansas at Monticello
Boll Weevils held off a late charge by Belhaven College, winning 97-86 on Nov. 1
at Steelman Fieldhouse.
The Weevils raced out to an early lead, leading by as many as 23
(52-29) in the first half, but Belhaven closed the half on a 9-2 run to narrow
the UAM lead to 16 (54-38) at intermission. UAM came out firing in the second
half, pushing their lead to 62-42 just over two minutes into the half, but the
Blazers chipped away at the UAM lead, pulling to within nine points (77-68) with
10 minutes left.
UAM kept the Blazers at arm's length over the next four minutes and
broke away from a 10-point lead with a 10-1 run to push their lead to 94-75
with 2:14 remaining.
Belhaven was able to close the gap slightly in the last two
minutes, finishing the game on a 9-2 run.
Holland led all scorers with 20 points. Nate Newell added 19,
Billy McDaniel and Durran Goodwin both chipped in 17, and Brandon Mayweather
added 13. McDaniel finished the game with a double-double, adding 12
rebounds and leading all players.
UAM out-rebounded Belhaven 37-27, including a 18-9 advantage on the
offensive glass. Belhaven shot 14-of-23 from three-point range, including 7-of-9
in the second half.
The Weevils open regular season play Wednesday, Nov. 16, hosting Arkansas Baptist at Steelman
Fieldhouse. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
