ROTC Returns to Campus

J.B. Duncan
Contributing Writer

For the first time since the mid '80s, Army Reserve Officers' Training Corps is being offered at UAM.

Army ROTC allows students to be commissioned into the U.S. Army, Army National Guard or the Army Reserve when they graduate college. The Army realizes not every person who takes part in the ROTC program will go on to join the Army. In fact, there is no commitment needed until the junior year of college. Courses do count as electives and UAM is in the process of getting Military Science approved as a minor. This is expected to be resolved by the spring.

UAM's ROTC program is currently being hosted by the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff. When there are a sufficient number of students in the program, UAM will be able to administer the program independently. Until then, UAPB will continue to provide instructors who will teach the classes on UAM's campus. The classes are currently offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The schedule for the spring semester is not yet finalized, but the days are expected to remain the same.

The benefits of participating in ROTC can be as limitless as you want them to be. Contracted cadets receive monthly tax-free stipends, Federal Tuition Assistance and many other benefits, including, but not limited to, full-paid scholarships, the Montgomery GI Bill and federal work-study. On top of all of the financial benefits, there are other rewards as well. ROTC is one of the best leadership courses ever taught on a college campus. ROTC teaches time-management and planning skills as well as self-discipline and organization. These are things that are necessities in proving to a potential employer that you are the most qualified candidate for the job.
