Students Need to Meet Advisers

Eric Gaston
Staff Writer

With pre-registration nearing, students will be preparing to meet with their advisers.

Advising is the process in which students meet with their assigned adviser for knowledge and additional information about a certain major. Advisers supply students with useful information pertaining to their major. UAM student Amanda Warner agrees.

"My adviser helps me very well with the advising process.  The advising she gives me is really helping me a lot," she said.

Registration time is not the only time a student should seek advising. Students should seek the assistance of their adviser for issues they are having with classes, personal help, campus resource information and any questions they may have regarding their schedule.

The advising process is supposed to enhance students’ educational duration. It should be a year-long process. Students should stay in contact with their adviser all year and keep them informed about various aspects of their lives. This valuable information can better assist advisers when scheduling students in various classes.

Ranelle Eubanks, assistant vice chancellor for Academic Affairs, enjoys the role she plays as adviser.

"I really like advising; it gives me an opportunity to work one-on-one (with) students," she said. "I try my best to lead the students in the right directions."

Pre-registration for the Spring 2006 semester starts Monday, Nov. 7. It will last for two weeks. Students taking advantage of pre-registration will have until Jan. 3, 2006, to finalize their registration.
