October: Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Through Oct. 21 - Homecoming Spirit Week

Through Oct. 22 - The Bookstore is having a “20 percent Off” sale on all logo items in the store. In addition, several racks will be marked 50 percent off! Discounts do not apply to school supplies, or items already discounted. The Bookstore will be open Oct. 22  from 10 a.m. until  3 p.m. for all your pre-game supplies (car flags, foam hands, pom-poms etc.) prior to the football game.

Oct. 22 - Omega Psi Phi's Q’s of Rho Mu will host an after-homecoming party Saturday at the Drew County Fairgrounds beginning at 10:11 p.m.

Oct. 23 - The UNITY choir will sing at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Metropolitan AME Zion Church.

Oct. 24 - Deadline to submit entry forms for the Halloween Pumpkin Contest. The Ambassadors will sponsor a Pumpkin Decorating Contest Oct. 28. While any recognized campus organization can enter, each organization may enter only once. No entry fee is required. A DECORATED pumpkin (not carved) must be turned into the Office of Admissions by noon Oct. 26. Pumpkins will be judged on idea, creativity, originality and neatness. Prizes will be awarded for first, second and third place. All pumpkins will be donated to a local children’s home for their annual pumpkin auction (Please keep this in mind when decorating). Entry forms are available in the Office of Admissions.

Oct. 24-29 - Hot Springs Documentary Film Institute's 2005 Documentary Film Festival. A full schedule is available at www.hsdfi.org/workshop.

Oct. 25 - The Halloween program "The Halloween Tree" will be featured at the Pomeroy Planetarium Tuesday at 7 p.m. The program caters to children and features Ray Bradbury on the history and background of some of the Halloween traditions of mummies, witches, skeletons, etc.

Oct. 25-Nov. 4 - The South Entrance of the Fine Arts Center will be closed due to construction repairs. Use the front entrance to Spencer Gallery during that time.

Oct. 26 - "UAM Red Ribbon Day 2005" - Pick up a FREE red ribbon at the UC Green Room Wednesday between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. (Sponsored by UAM Gatewary Student Support Services, Counseling & Testing, Student Health Services and the Wellness Committee). During the week of Oct. 24-30 , millions of people will celebrate a healthy, drug-free lifestyle by wearing or displaying a red ribbon during National Red Ribbon Week. The Red Ribbon is the symbol for drug, alcohol and tobacco prevention across America. For information on club drugs, click http://www.health.org/govpubs/phd852i/default.aspx. Oct. 27 - "Halloweevil" Bash - Join the Residence Hall Association in the Gibson University Center gym Thursday for a party from 7:30 p.m. until midnight. Attendees wearing costumes enter FREE while others can bring either $2 or two cans of food for admittance. Prizes will be provided for the best costume.

Oct. 29-30 - Daylight Savings Time ends at midnight between Saturday and Sunday.

Oct. 30-31 - Sigma Tau Gamma's "Haunted House" will be open at the Drew County Fairgrounds from 6-10 p.m. Admission is $3 per person and is open to all ages. For more information, contact Will Caldwell at 866-9545, Zack West at 377-0470 or Jeff Ogle at 723-0726.

Nov. 1 - Deadline for recommendations for Student Ambassadors to the Office of Admissions. Nominees should be current freshmen or sophomores, who are creative, enthusiastic, academically motivated, good communicators and able to donate time to student recruitment and events.

Nov. 1 - Deadline for international students living on campus and planning to stay during Thanksgiving and/or Christmas break to contact Mary Whiting, director of Admissions, at 460-1026 or whitingm@uamont.edu.

Nov. 1 - Application deadline for the Monticello PEO Chapter's $500 scholarship for one student in spring 2006. Pick up applications in the Office of Admissions on the first floor of Harris Hall. Consideration requires:

  • Completed application;
  • Female graduate of Drew Central or Monticello High School;
  • Minimum of 2.50 grade point average, with at least 24 college hours.

Nov. 2 - The UAM Marching Band will compete at the Texas UIL Marching contest in Mt. Pleasant, Texas.

Nov. 4 - Deadline to submit information for the 2006 Yearbook. Make sure your student organization appears in the 2006 yearbook. Fill out this contract and return it to 101 Jeter Hall.

New Weevil: Head Baseball Coach Kevin Downing and wife Annick are proud to announce they are the parents of a healthy baby boy. The 8 pound, 8 ounces baby has yet to be named as the parents expected a baby girl.

The Writing Center
   The Writing Center, located in the Arts and Humanities building, helps UAM students with computer and writing work.
   The Writing Center offers Internet research help and program help for programs such as Microsoft Word.
   The Writing Center helps students with brainstorming ideas for papers. The Web site offers grammar quizzes to help students with grammar.
   The Writing Center opens Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m.

Walk, jog or run your way to a GREAT STUDENT (FACULTY/STAFF) BODY and earn a FREE T-shirt! Walk, jog or run 50, 75 or 100 miles by the end of the Fall semester and be well on your way to having a physically fit, "GREAT" Student Body. Participation is open to all current UAM students, faculty and staff. Mileage must be completed by Dec. 16. Miles completed on treadmills, stairmaster, etc. count toward total miles. (Athletes may NOT count miles completed as part of their practice.) Sign up in the Intramural Office (lower level - University Center). Participants are required to record their weekly mileage on the official chart in the Intramural office.

Oct. 24 - The National Pan-Hellenic Conference will meet Monday at 7 p.m. in the Maxwell Lounge. Expected organizations include Zeta Phi Beta, Delta Sigma Theta, Omega Psi Phi, Alpha Phi Alpha, Phi Beta Sigma and Kappa Alpha Psi. Nov. 3 - The Chi Iota Sigma club meeting will feature UAM alumnus Steven Forrest. The CIS Club will be accepting applications for five book stipends to be awarded Dec. 1. Applications will be available beginning Nov. 3. The deadline to apply ends Nov. 15. Information and applications packages can be obtained in the CIS Office, located in 101 Babin Business Center.

The Alpha Chi Student Honorary conducts regular business meetings for members only during the activity period (12:40 p.m. – 1:30 p.m.) on the second Tuesday of each month. 

Baptist Collegiate Ministries serve lunch Wednesdays at noon. First-timers eat free and everyone else eats for $2. Proceeds benefit summer mission trips and other activities.

Missionary Baptist Student Fellowship meets Thursdays at 7 p.m. at the MBSF Center (near the tennis courts).

DREW COUNTY WRITERS - Drew Country Writers seek new members with a professional attitude and the commitment to publish. Members must produce tangible evidence that they write, though they may not have published at this point. Any CIS Club member interested in entering the Pumpkin Decorating Contest should contact Tillie Russell.  The pumpkin must be submitted by noon Oct. 26.

UNITED WAY - The Fall 2005 United Way Campaign continues through Nov. 21. Interested individuals or student groups wishing to participate should contact Mary Whiting at 460-1026 or whitingm@uamont.edu.

CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL PILLOW DRIVE - The UAM Ambassadors are sponsoring a pillow drive for the Children's Hospital. The Children's Hospital provides a small "travel" pillow to all cancer patients. Generally, this has a pillowcase (new or home-made) pinned with a small note indicating who is providing it and offering "special thoughts." The patients bring their "special" pillow to each treatment or hospitalization. Currently, Children’s Hospital is completely out of these because of the large number of patients. Any individual or organization can donate one or more pillows in the Office of Admissions until Nov. 15.

Recycle Your Rechargeable Batteries! - If it's rechargeable, it's recyclable! Just drop off your recyclable batteries in the Physical Plant Office and they will be recycled. For more information, call 460-1018, visit www.rbrc.org or call 1-800-8-BATTERY for the drop-off location nearest you.

ORGANIZATIONAL DISPLAYS – The library hosts displays of student organizations. For more information, contact Mary Heady, Special Collections Librarian, at 460-1080 or via e-mail at heady@uamont.edu.

The AWS Foundation has announced several scholarship opportunities for students studying welding technology, engineering or associated careers. These opportunities exist for both undergraduate and graduate programs. Application deadlines range from Jan. 15 to March 1. Complete details and applications are available at www.aws.org/foundation.

The Arkansas Governor’s Commission on People with Disabilities awards several scholarships each year. Pick up applications in the Office of Admissions on the first floor of Harris Hall. Deadline for application submission is Feb. 27, 2006. Eligibility for consideration includes:

  1. Completed application;
  2. Documented disability, including completed medical form in the application;
  3. Letter of good standing;
  4. Three letters of recommendation;
  5. Official transcript.

Announcements

Blackboard bought WebCT, the campus' course management system, with the deal expected to become final sometime in January 2006.

Spring break dates listed in the UAM Catalog 2005-07 for spring 2006 and spring 2007 have been corrected in the online catalog to reflect the following: spring 2006, March 20-24 and spring 2007, March 19-23.

UAM's new master plan is available for viewing on the University Home page.

Tentative refund dates for the Fall 2005 semester:
