Professor: Students to Know Crime

Sheena Garrard
Staff Writer

The new Criminal Justice professor said students should expect him to teach with a hands-on approach.

Michael Botts said he would like for his classes to visit a prison or juvenile detention centers to see how they work.

"I want the students to go out and see what the world has to offer in the Criminal Justice program,” Botts said, adding that he wants his students to have a strong criminal justice background and also understand crime in general.

Vanneise Collins, dean of the school of Social and Behavioral Sciences, said Botts brings diversity to the criminal justice program. She also said she hired Botts because of his academic preparation in the criminal justice field.

Born in Dewitt and raised in Helena, Botts recently graduated from the American University in Washington, D.C. with his doctorate in Sociology and Justice Studies in August 2005. He received his master’s in Criminal Justice Science at Illinois State University and his bachelor’s in Psychology from University of Central Arkansas.

Botts taught at El Myra University in New York, N.Y., before coming to the University of Arkansas at Monticello. He said he hopes to start a human right’s organization on campus.

Botts' family includes 4-year-old daughter, Teresa; 2-year-old son, Blake; and his wife, Tina. He enjoys camping, hiking and running.
