Dave General is the only Ant Entomologist in the Philippines, and he is now studying at the University of Arkansas at Monticello.

General came to the United States Aug. 14. For two weeks he was a guest at Harvard University’s Museum of Comparative Zoology. From there General came to UAM to get his Masters in Forest Resources in Geological Information Systems.

"UAM found me through an ad in the 'Enological Society of America.' The ad was looking for an Ant Identifier. So my partner told me I should give it a try," he said.

Born in Davo City, Mindanao, an island in the Philippines, General grew up in Manila, but went back to Mindanao to study at Xavier University in Cagayan de Oro City. General also taught at a Jesuit school called Ateneo De Naga University in Naga City.

This is not his first experience in the United States; General has been here about five times before traveling state-to-state by car, looking for sheep to breed in the Philippines.

Now he is located in the Maxwell Suites studying towards his degree. On his free time he likes to read and do crossword puzzles.

"I like to think, not just stare at the walls," he said. "Even though I have been in the U.S. five times before, this is my first time as a student. I like the people here because they are so helpful and courteous."
