?Intelligent Design

Thanks for the article dealing with the controversy over intelligent design. I asked for a show of hands in my Elements of Geology classes of who knew anything about, or had ever heard of intelligent design. Only four students out around 90 that were in class that day knew what I was talking about.

I'm sure one of the Arkansas state legislators out to make a name for her/himself will be introducing a bill next session requiring it to be taught in the PK - 12 public schools. Rep. Martin introduced HB 2601 - “AN ACT CONCERNING INTELLIGENT DESIGN; PERMITTING THE TEACHING OF THE THEORY OF INTELLIGENT DESIGN IN PUBLIC SCHOOLS; AND FOR OTHER PURPOSES” during the last session, but fortunately it didn't go anywhere.

Here is another interesting Web page dealing with this and other controversies. http://www.defconamerica.org/

Hassler's article/behavior

UAM Voice,

In regards to Lee Hassler's recent article "The Last Flicker," he states "This destruction to the innocent bulletin boards lends the astute observer to wonder if the wrath Rita imparted on UAM was in response to the poorly phrased decree threatening dire judicial consequences for any English or Journalism major who may be inclined to commit the egregious crime of conjugating verb tenses in the breezeway of Maxwell after 10 p.m."

Where on our warning signs does it state anything about a English or Journalism major? And poorly phrased? The signs are in fact grammatically correct. The signs will remain up at Maxwell. If Hassler feels there is a problem with them he should contact a RA, RD or even me and discuss the problem, not bypass Residence Life and write an accusing article. I found his article difficult to read and/or comprehend.

Also, I know Hassler wanted to get some great pictures of the football game for the Voice, but he greatly outstepped his boundaries on Saturday night. Not once, but twice he was observed going under the yellow rope and standing on the sidelines taking pictures. At one point he went on the field with the game in progress. Where was his media pass? Does he not know he's supposed to only stand between the goal line and the 20yd. line & he's to never step on the actual field? There's numerous witnesses to this and he's lucky public safety didn't escort him off the field.

I appreciate the UAM Voice and enjoy reading your articles. Thank you for letting me voice my concerns. If I can ever help in anyway please let me know.

Regards,
Mitch Meredith
Director of Housing & Residence Life

Adviser's note: Hassler and Meredith exchanged e-mails regarding the signage, which has been changed to read, "There is to be no congregating/loitering in the Maxwell breezeway.

After additional correspondence with Sports Information Director Paul Smith, Voice photographers will have a press pass for future athletic events. Though Hassler received permission to go beyond the yellow rope, he did not know that "the field and the area between 25-yard lines (midfield) is off-limits to media during play (even during timeouts and deadball situations), with few exceptions. The entire field is open at halftime and before and after the game." All Voice photographers will adhere to this rule in the future.
