Field Instructor Enjoys Atmosphere

Theressa Lee
Staff Writer

The school of Social and Behavioral Sciences welcomes DeWayne Bonner as an IV-E Field Instructor.

"I like the quiet, but friendly atmosphere in Monticello," Bonner said. "I love my current job, because I am a people's person and I come in contact with all types of people on a collegiate level and professional level."

Bonner holds a Bachelor of Science degree in psychology with a minor in mass communications/broadcast journalism.

Bonner began his current job as field instructor in September 2004. He provides daily support to DCFS workers or supervisors by validating, educating, giving direction and teaching social work skills. He increases worker productivity, effectiveness, professional growth and worker retention. He provides consultation, county and state resource information, assist in prioritizing time management, and identifies and assesses workers strengths and weakness dealing with their individual training needs and skill development such as: interviewing, writing, communication, empathy and professional etiquette

Tammy S. Vaughn, University of Arkansas at Monticello academic partnership coordinator, said Bonner's bachelor's degree and experience with the division of Children and Family Services met the criteria to be selected for the position of academic partnership research assistant. His knowledge and experience with child welfare will help him perform the duties of a mentor/field instructor.

"I have found that Mr. Bonner is a conscientious and dependable employee," Vaughn said. "He possesses creative skills exhibited in his mentoring of new DCFS Worker Trainees and in leading support groups."

Bonner is a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. He belongs to the chapter of Kappa Iota at Southern Arkansas University in Magnolia, Ark. He also acts as adviser to the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity and the campus chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.
