Businesses Hesitant to Explain Katrina Aid

Noah Anglin
Staff Writer

Many local businesses had little to say when asked about the relief attempts to help Katrina victims in the area.

Of four businesses, three seemed distant at best when asked about their relief plans, and one had no comment at all.

Mark Hanes, a manager for Wal-Mart, said although donations were given to the Red Cross, no Katrina victims would be given precedence over other people.

Karen Jones, an employee at Taco Bell’s main office, said, "I’m surprised there hasn’t been more Katrina victims apply."

When asked if they would receive special considerations for employment, she said no, but added they "are more than welcome" to apply for a job.

According to the sign outside the store, McDonald’s had a plan.

"Katrina victims apply inside," the sign read.

McDonald’s manager Jason Price said the store's not taking special steps to help with evacuee's employment problems, but noted donations for the victims were being accepted by the Ronald McDonald House.
