October: Breast Cancer Awareness Month
The Foliate Oak literary magazine's
fall issue debuted Sept. 30. This issue features the following writers, as
well as artwork, monkeys, the meaning of life and helpful gardening tips. Oct. 1 - Parent/Family Appreciation Day. All academic units participate by staffing a display table concerning activities, clubs and, of course, class information for majors in their departments. Students often look forward to bringing their parents, spouses or siblings to campus to meet their college professors during this event. The festivities include:
Oct. 1 - The Turner Neal Museum of Natural History will be open during Parent/Family Appreciation Day. Not only will guests be able to view the collection of native wildlife, but a program on Monarch butterflies from 10 a.m. - noon will feature the tagging and release of laboratory-raised butterflies that will join the migration of wild butterflies headed for Mexico. Oct. 1 - The UAM Bookstore is having a “20 percent Off” sale on all logo items in the store. In addition, several racks will be marked 50 percent off! Discounts do not apply to school supplies, or items already discounted. The Bookstore will be open Saturday from noon until 6 p.m. for all your pre-game supplies (car flags, foam hands, pom-poms etc.) prior to the football game. Oct. 1 - Phi Beta Sigma sponsors a "Family Appreciation Day Bash" immediately after the football game at the Drew County Fairgrounds. Cover charge: $5. Oct. 3 - Delta Sigma Theta sorority will hold a FREE GAS drawing. For a $2 donation, win up to $100. Oct. 4 - Pi Kappa Delta and The Debate Society present the 3rd Annual Battle of the Bands and Battle of the Voices Monday at 7 p.m. in the Fine Arts Center auditorium. Oct. 4 - The Blossoms volleyball team hosts Central Arkansas at Steelman Fieldhouse. The match begins at 7 p.m. Oct. 5 - An American Red Cross Blood Drive will be held Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the UAM College of Technology-McGehee's Student Center. Donors with photo identification or donor cards will receive FREE T-shirts and refreshments. Oct. 5 - Robert "red hawk" Moore, professor of English, will give a free, public reading and lecture on his four books of poetry from 3-4 p.m. in Library Conference Room A. A book sale and signing will follow. Oct. 6 - National Depression Screening Day - UAM Counseling & Testing and UAM Student Health Services will hold FREE, anonymous mental health screenings for depression, bi-polar disorder, generalized anxiety disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder in the UC Green Room Thursday between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. For more information, call Laura Hughes at 460-1454 or Terri Richardson at 460-1051. Oct. 6 - The Board of Visitors of the University of Arkansas at Monticello will hold its quarterly meeting at 4 p.m. in the Spencer Gallery of the Fine Arts Center. The meeting is open to the public. Oct. 7 - DEADLINE (4:30 p.m.) for compliance with Arkansas Department of Health Tuberculosis Skin Testing for Foreign Born Students Program. Oct. 10 - A free, public seminar features M. David Luneau, Jr., who filmed the Ivory-Billed Woodpecker when the bird was re-discovered after being thought extinct. The school of Forest Resources sponsors Monday's seminar at 7 p.m. Oct. 11 - The Assembly holds its first meeting Tuesday at 3:15 p.m. in Spencer Gallery of the Fine Arts Center. The agenda details expected discussion topics. Oct. 11 - The 2005 Homecoming Court group picture will be taken Tuesday at 3:45 p.m. in the Gibson University Center Green Room. Oct. 12 - The Phi Beta Sigma chapter holds its "Miss Blue and White" contest. Oct. 12 - Sigma Apollo, the Phi Beta Sigma Talent Show, will be held in the Fine Arts Center at 7 p.m. The entry fee is $5, and admission is $3. A prize of $100 will be awarded to the winner. Intramurals
Oct. 3 -Monday 3 p.m. Soccer Manager's Meeting "B" Walk, jog or run your way to a GREAT STUDENT (FACULTY/STAFF) BODY and earn a FREE T-shirt! Walk, jog or run 50, 75 or 100 miles by the end of the Fall semester and be well on your way to having a physically fit, "GREAT" Student Body. Participation is open to all current UAM students, faculty and staff. Mileage must be completed by Dec. 16. Miles completed on treadmills, stairmaster, etc. count toward total miles. (Athletes may NOT count miles completed as part of their practice.) Sign up in the Intramural Office (lower level - University Center). Participants are required to record their weekly mileage on the official chart in the Intramural office.
Meetings Oct. 5 - The Forestry Club will meet at 5 p.m. in the Forest Resource building lobby. The club meets every Wednesday, and the new Constitution allows any interested student to join, no matter what their major. The Forestry Club makes money by selling firewood. Anyone interested in winter wood should contact the club. For more information, contact Chase Davis at CLD3105@uamont.edu. Oct. 6 - The Chi Iota Sigma club meets at 1 p.m. to elect a vice-president. Oct 11 - The Criminal Justice Club meets at 12:30 p.m. in 207 Memorial Classroom Building. The Social Work Club meets the first Wednesday of each month. The Alpha Chi Student Honorary conducts regular business meetings for members only during the activity period (12:40 p.m. – 1:30 p.m.) on the second Tuesday of each month. The Chess Club meets Mondays at 4:30 p.m. in room A-23 of the Science Center. U.N.I.T.Y meets Tuesdays at 7 p.m. in 202 Memorial Classroom Building. "Bloodlust and Chili Dogs," a student organized film, is looking for talent. If you are too shy to be on screen, then there are plenty of off-screen positions yet to be filled. The AWS Foundation has announced several scholarship opportunities for students studying welding technology, engineering, or associated careers.
