Weevils Advance To Semifinals Of GSC Tourney By Topping Lions

TUPELO, Miss. – Led by a 25-point night by Billy McDaniel (Sr., Hearne, Texas), the University of Arkansas at Monticello Boll Weevils advanced to the semifinals of the Gulf South Conference tournament with an 81-62 victory over the University of North Alabama Lions.

While the Weevils led wire-to-wire, the two teams fought tooth and nail through the first half. The Weevils opened the game hot, pushing ahead to an 11-point (17-6) lead just seven minutes into the game, but the Lions fought back, pulling to within five (23-18) with 5:40 left in the period.

UAM was able to extend the lead to nine (38-29) at the half.

As the second half opened, the Lions pulled to within four (46-42) with 12:19 left, but McDaniel would prove to be a more than capable answer any time the Lions seemed poised to take the lead away from the Weevils.

UAM finished the contest on a 12-0 run over the last 2:19 to seal the victory.

McDaniel’s 25 points led all scorers. DeMarcus Wilson (Sr., Lancaster, Texas) added a career-high 19 points in the win. J.B. Williams (Jr., Compton, Calif.) and Nate Newell (Jr., Monticello, Ark.) both scored in double figures with 13 and 11 points, respectively.

The Weevils will square off against No. 4 Montevallo on Saturday at 7:30 in the semifinals of the Gulf South Conference tournament.

The University of Arkansas at Monticello Boll Weevils (18-9, 11-5 GSC) placed four players in double figures as they captured an 81-75 victory over the Ouachita Baptist Tigers Feb. 25 at Steelman Fieldhouse.

The Weevils led throughout the first half, pushing ahead by 11 (19-8) after a Brandon Mayweather (Sr., Crossett) lay-up with 11:25 remaining. OBU fought back but the Weevils were able to extend their lead to 15 (39-24) with 42 seconds left after a Nate Newell (Jr., Monticello) jumper.

UAM led 40-29 at the half.

Ouachita chipped into the Weevil lead in the second half, pulling ahead (56-55) after a Lucky Butler jumper with 9:42 left; but the Weevils quickly reclaimed the lead and cruised to the victory.

Newell’s 28 points led all scorers. Billy McDaniel (Sr., Hearne, Texas), Mayweather and J.B. Williams (Jr., Compton, Calif.) also scored in double figures with 17, 16 and 13 points, respectively.
