Managing Editor Even though they've released at least one album since their 2005 release "Mezmerize," System of a Down's politically charged album remains relevant. The album debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard charts. But the success may have come more from its blatantly anti-war and anti-Bush message than its hard rocking tracks and Serj Tankian's stunning vocals. The only downside is the overplayed single "B.Y.O.B." This song could be heard everywhere this summer. It was on MTV and VH1. System of a Down performed it on Saturday Night Live and people even had it as a ring tone. Overexposure is an understatement. This song was forced down music fans' throats. Oh yeah, did I mention it won a Grammy for best hard rock performance? Still, considering the current state of music, I tend to agree. If they ever decide to re-release "Mezmerize," System of a Down should put a warning label on it that reads, "Caution: Republicans may be strongly offended." The aforementioned "B.Y.O.B." contains the lyrics, "Why don't presidents fight the war? Why do they always send the poor?" and "Sad State" contains the chorus, "We'll all go down in history with a sad Statue of Liberty and a generation that didn't agree." However, they don't just bash
politicians. They also slap Hollywood around a bit. You
don't have to listen to "Old School Hollywood" or "Lost
in Hollywood" long to figure out that System of a Down
aren't fond of that juggernaut churning out filth in
L.A. Seeing as how this album is
almost a year old, you could probably find it for a
relatively low price somewhere. It's definitely worth
having in your collection, given you aren't too stiff
about your politics. What else can you say about an
album whose worst song won a Grammy? ŠThe Voice 2006 Revised 03/03/2006 11:51:43 PM http://www.uamont.edu/Organizations/TheVoice/3_19/soad.htm |
