Proposed DU Chapter Needs Student Involvement

Only a few people turned out for the second organizational meeting for a proposed chapter of Ducks Unlimited (DU) at the University of Arkansas at Monticello.

DU director Todd Carlton approached Chris Sims, assistant professor of biology and the man behind the DU meetings, to set up a UAM-based chapter. While, at this moment, there is no DU chapter at UAM, from the looks of things, there will be one here pretty soon.

“We are trying to establish a chapter that is more appealing to students in order to get students more involved with DU,” Sims said.

Sims said in a campus e-mail that, although some have started the necessary paperwork to form the organization, they will be forced to pass on this opportunity if there is not an increase in the interest level such as more students showing up for the meetings. If you would like any more info on DU and what they represent the check out www.ducks.org.

Among people who attended this week’s meeting were rodeo team member Page Bollin and three-time female World Champion duck caller Angela Garner of Weiner, Ark. When asked what two beautiful girls were doing at a DU meeting they replied, “Because we love to duck hunt!”

The group will meet again March 7 at 4 p.m. in the Science Center to determine interest and develop a constitution and by-laws. It will also discuss possibilities for future fundraising events, socials, a web page, and T-shirts. If you cannot attend, e-mail Sims at simsc@uamont.edu  to voice your interest and state a meeting time which would be better for you.
