The
University of Arkansas at Monticello speech and debate team brought home 11 team
and individual awards from the Louisiana Invitational Forensics Association
Tournament held recently at Louisiana State University at Alexandria.
The team was lead by strong individual event performances by Joel
Brown of Monticello, Brian Rauls of Bearden and Whitney Romans of Crossett. The
duo interpretation team of Brown and Rauls placed first. In addition, Rauls also
placed third in after-dinner speaking and second in informative speaking while
Brown placed fourth in dramatic interpretation, second in impromptu speaking,
first in informative and first in the pentathlon competition. Romans received
fourth in impromptu speaking and sixth in prose interpretation.
In novice debate, Tim Williamson finished in second place and tied
for fifth place speaker. In the varsity division, Brown was named a
quarterfinalist. Also representing the UAM squad where Matt Baumgarten of
Monticello, Lydia Gorse of Texarkana, Ark., Jessi Shaw of Crossett, Lauren
Raynor of Covington, Tenn., Eric Bell of Eudora and Chris Halley of North
Little Rock.
"This team is getting better with every tournament," said Scott Kuttenkuler, director of forensics.
"They are working hard and that effort is showing in their performances."
UAM's
next competition will be March 17-19 in Shreveport, La.,
at the LSU-S Ethics Tournament.
