The Blossoms won one and lost one while the Weevils won Saturday.

One of the most heated rivalries in the Gulf South Conference and in NCAA Division II basketball is the UAM vs. Ouachita Baptist University basketball game, which was held Feb. 25 in Steelman Fieldhouse. The 4th and Long team would like to thank everyone who reads our weekly column for coming out and supporting our Boll Weevils and our Cotton Blossoms on Saturday for their last home game; it was a blast.

The women produced some very impressive numbers as they very handily put away the Lady Tigers of OBU. In the first half, Katrina Dean was on for the Blossoms, shooting five of seven from the field, and three of five from behind the 3-point line. The Lady Tigers didn't have much of an answer for our Blossoms' shoot fest, only scoring 27 points to our girls 40.

The second half of the game was more of the same from the Blossoms. The Lady Tigers showed some signs of life but not enough to overcome a 13-point deficit they put themselves into at the end of the first half. Katrina Dean was still on fire, shooting eight of 12 from the field and five of nine from behind the 3-point line. The only answer for Katrina was Princella Smith who was five of 10 from the field and five of six from the free throw line. The final buzzer sounded the victory with the final score UAM 82-OBU 65.

The men's game was a photograph of the women's with one exception: team scoring. The Weevils followed a policy of "share the wealth" in the first half. Brandon Mayweather had eight points, Billy McDaniel had nine points, MJumbe Williams had 13 points and Nate Newell had an astounding 17 points in the first half while the Tigers had no answer to UAM's scoring. The first half ended with the score of 40-27.

In the second half, the men still practiced their policy, and all four boys ended the night in double digits. The only noticeable scorer for the Tigers was Jaranimo Marks who was 12 of 21 from the field and one of three from 3-point land. The final buzzer sounded an 81-75 victory for the Weevils.

Wednesday saw the Cotton Blossom's first-round Gulf South Conference tournament game. The Blossoms took on the ladies of West Alabama. Katrina Dean and Jenna Thomas were the leading scorers for the Blossoms in the first half with 12 and 10 points respectively. It was a back-and-forth battle as the first period came to a close with the score West Alabama 33, Blossoms 32.

The second half was just as tight as Katrina Dean finished the game with 22 points and Jenna Thomas finished with 15 points. The Blossoms fought down to the wire but came up short as the Blossoms fell to the ladies of West Alabama, 70-69.

The Boll Weevils open GSC tournament play Friday in Tupelo, Miss. when the face off against North Alabama. The Weevils tournament wrap-up and highlights will be in next week's issue of 4th and Long.
