The beauties stay on track, but the beasts drop one late in the week.

The University of Arkansas-Monticello basketball teams' good week continued this week with two strong and convincing wins against the University of Central Arkansas basketball program.

First there was the come from behind at halftime win by the Cotton Blossoms over the Sugar Bears. In the first half, it was the Wendy Young and Jenna Thomas show, combining for 19 points on their own, but the Sugar Bears had their answer to our dynamic duo, with Allicia Kellogg draining every shot she took. The buzzer rang ending the first half with our Cotton Blossoms trailing the Sugar Bears 30-28.

This changed as the second half started with the Cotton Blossoms getting out to an early three-point lead and never looking back, getting ahead of the Sugar Bears at one point by 10 points. Once again, Young was on fire as she scored an amazing 14 points from the field, and was 3-of-5 at the free-throw line. The final buzzer sounded the Blossoms victory, 71-66.

The Boll Weevils were also on fire Monday night, never trailing the Bears. In the first half, the Weevils scored 10 points unanswered as Nate Newell couldn’t miss from the field. DeMarcus Wilson scored 10 points in the first half. The first half buzzer sounded and the score was 33-23 with the Boll Weevils on top.

In the second half, Wilson cooled off, but Billy McDaniel heated up real quick, scoring 13 points in the second half. This carried the Boll Weevils to another victory, 69-60.

Unfortunately, we weren’t able to go to Memphis for the Christian Brothers University vs. UAM games because of scheduling conflicts, but we do have scores: the Blossoms stay on a roll beating the Lady Buccaneers by three, 68-65, but the Weevils dropped one to the Buccaneers, 66-62.

This weekend is the last home game against the Ouachita Baptist University Tigers. The women start at 2 p.m. Saturday, and the men start 4 p.m. We would like to encourage everyone to come out and have a great time at the ballgame.
