Paul Smith
Sports Information Director

MAGNOLIA --- Billy McDaniel (Sr., Hearne, Texas) tied a career high with 34 points as the University of Arkansas at Monticello Boll Weevils (16-8, 9-4 GSC) rolled to an 87-69 win Feb. 16 over the Southern Arkansas University Muleriders. With the win, the Weevils qualified for the Gulf South Conference tournament in Tupelo, Miss.

McDaniel was 12-of-16 from the floor including a perfect 6-of-6 from three-point range.

UAM raced out to a 16-point lead (33-17) just over 10 minutes in after a dunk by Derek Easter (Fr., El Dorado) and would push its lead to 21 (47-26) with 3:05 left in the half, before the Muleriders began a late rally in the first half to cut the halftime margin to 13 (47-34).

The Weevils opened the second half hot, pushing back out to a 22-point (68-46) lead with 8:34 left, and held the Muleriders at arm’s length down the stretch as they cruised to the victory.

McDaniel’s 36 points were a game high. Nate Newell (Jr., Monticello) had 15 points, Brandon Mayweather (Sr., Crossett) added 14 points, and J.B. Williams (Jr., Compton, Calif.) scored 13 points in the winning effort.

The Weevils held a 34-24 advantage on the rebounding glass, and shot 61.5 percent from the floor (32-of-52) for the contest.

The Boll Weevils return to action Monday, Feb. 20, as they face Central Arkansas at Steelman Fieldhouse. A 7 p.m. tip-off is scheduled.
