Blossoms Blanked at UNA Tourney

Paul Smith
Sports Information Director

FLORENCE, Ala. --- The University of Arkansas-Monticello Cotton Blossoms (3-5) were unable to muster any offense during the rain-shortened University of North Alabama tournament, falling 3-0 to UNA in the tourney opener and then dropping an 8-0 decision to No. 4 Alabama-Huntsville in the finale.

The Blossoms loaded the bases with one out in the first inning of the opener after a single, a hit batsman, and a fielding error, but were unable to score any runs. Meanwhile, the Lions scored once in the first on an error and then added two runs on a pair of RBI singles in the third inning.

UAM starter Ashley Burkett (Sr., West Monroe, La.), dropped to 1-2 on the season after allowing eight hits and three runs, two earned, in 3 1/3 innings of work. Kelli Little (So., West Monroe, La.) entered the game in relief in the fourth inning and pitched 2 2/3 perfect innings.

UNA's Stephanie Glienke (1-0) picked up the win after allowing just three hits in seven innings.

In the finale, the Blossoms once again loaded the bases in the first inning but were unable to muster any offense. UAH left no room for error, scoring three runs in the first, one apiece in the second and third, and three more in the fourth inning to seal the victory.

Leah Vaughn (So., Crestview, Fla.) allowed eight runs, six earned, on seven hits and four walks in four innings, falling to 2-2 on the season. UAH starter Sage Woodham picked up the win after scattering three hits over five innings.

UAM managed just six hits for the day.

The Cotton Blossoms returned to action Friday, Feb. 17, as they traveled to Conway to take part in the Central Arkansas Classic. Results were unknown as of press time.
