Weather Wreaks Havoc on Field Day

Plunging temperatures and a frigid north wind played havoc with the University of Arkansas at Monticello Forestry Club's annual Field Day competition Feb. 11 at Weevil Pond.

Frigid temperatures cut short the physical competition on Saturday, eliminating both the log birling (rolling a log in the waters of Weevil Pond) and the pole climb.

"We already know who our competitors for Conclave are going to be in those events," said Lynne Thompson, professor of forestry and club sponsor, "so there's no reason for anyone to catch pneumonia."

Field Day annually tests the Forestry Club's lumberjack skills, with the top students representing the university at the annual Association of Southern Forestry Clubs Conclave competition, scheduled this year for March 9-12 at Louisiana Tech University in Ruston.

Conclave tests the technical and physical forestry skills of students from 14 universities throughout the South. The participating schools include UAM, the University of Georgia, Stephen F. Austin State University, Clemson University, North Carolina State University, Virginia Tech University, Auburn University, Louisiana State University, Louisiana Tech University, Mississippi State University, Oklahoma State University, the University of Tennessee, Texas A&M University and the University of Florida.

UAM managed to win Conclave 28 times in the event's 48-year history, including 27 of the last 39, 17 of 22, and the last three in a row.
