Young's 26 Leads Blossoms Past Southern Arkansas

MAGNOLIA --- Wendy Young (Sr., Chapmans, St. Vincent) scored a game-high 26 points as the University of Arkansas at Monticello Cotton Blossoms (12-12, 6-7 GSC) downed the Southern Arkansas University Lady Muleriders 74-55 Feb. 16 at the W.T. Watson Athletic Center.

Young started the game on a torrid pace, scoring UAM’s first 10 points over the first 5:19 of the ballgame as the Blossoms pushed ahead to an early 10-7 lead. After SAU narrowed the Blossom lead to two (18-16) with 6:13 remaining, the Blossoms went on a 16-5 run to push ahead by 13 (34-21) with 1:38 remaining in the half.

SAU narrowed the gap to nine (34-25) at the half.

The Lady Muleriders cut the UAM lead to eight (52-44) with 9:27 remaining, but the Blossoms got hot over the next seven minutes, pushing ahead by 21 (73-52) with 2:04 remaining in the contest, and the Blossoms held SAU scoreless over the final 1:51 to seal the victory.

Young's 26 points led all players. Gemma Gibson (Soph., Dodd City, Texas) added 13 points and Jenna Thomas (Sr., Shreveport, La.) scored 10 points. UAM held a 34-31 advantage on the glass while shooting 50 percent (25-of-50) from the floor.

The win moves the Blossoms back into a fifth-place tie in the Gulf South Conference race with Arkansas Tech. The Blossoms hold a tiebreaker advantage by virtue of their season sweep over the Golden Suns.

UAM returns to action on Monday, Feb. 20, as they host Central Arkansas at Steelman Fieldhouse. A 5 p.m. tip-off is scheduled.

Blossoms spur Lady Mustangs

Young scored 17 first-half points to lead the Cotton Blossoms to an 88-61 victory over the Central Baptist College Lady Mustangs Feb.13 in a non-conference matchup at Steelman Fieldhouse.

The Cotton Blossoms controlled the contest through the first half, pushing their lead to as many as 27 (51-24) after a three-pointer by Teokea Wilkerson (So., Shreveport, La.) with 20 seconds remaining in the half before going into the half up 25 (51-26).

UAM continued their march forward in the second half, pushing their lead to 37 (77-40) with 7:15 left after a jumper by Stephanie Boggans (Jr., Jackson, Miss.), and held the Lady Mustangs at bay the remainder of the way.

Young’s 17 points tied CBC’s Chenell Tucker for a game high. Boggans added 15 points and Wilkerson added 10 in the victory.

CBC held a 36-34 advantage on the rebounding glass, while UAM connected on 11-of-31 three-point attempts.
