Staff Writer Yawande, one of the most sought after independent artists in the world, entertained students at the University of Arkansas at Monticello with her adaptation of alternative music, which included blues, rock and soul. The entertainer travels the college circuits and delivers a multicultural lecture-performance that portrays a message of hope and peace to a new generation. Yawande's interest in social issues began when she was a teen. She realized through the years that many young people shared some of the same issues. They were concerned about fitting in with their peers, being ridiculed for their dreams or feeling left out for being the wrong color. "Just like music … our hearts all beat to the same rhythm," Yawande said. Her award winning "A Journey of Spirit" celebrates the persons that overcame many adversities with regard to social issues through the power of music. From the beat of the African drum to the birth of Rock and Hip Hop, Yawande offered a spiritual uplifting to students in a time of cultural differences and encouraged a greater understanding of others. The artist received
classical training in voice and piano at Carnegie Mellon
Conservatory of Music and Howard University. She
