Weevils Continue Best Start in School History with Doubleheader Sweep of UAPB

The University of Arkansas at Monticello Boll Weevils (11-0) continued their record season-opening run with a Feb. 15 doubleheader sweep over Arkansas-Pine Bluff at Weevil Field, winning 8-0 and 4-1.

In the opener, the two teams traded scoreless first and second innings before the Weevils broke through in the fourth inning, as Cody Tornberg (Sr., Houston, Texas) opened scoring on a two-out error. UAM added two more on a single by Cody Ellis (Sr., Bullard, Texas) and another on a single by Ryland Kathrein (Soph., Chilliwack, B.C.) to give UAM a 4-0 lead after three.

The Weevils picked up where they left off in the bottom of the fourth inning, as Enrique Odreman (Jr., Caracas, Venezuela) stole home with two outs, and both Nick Tillsley (Soph., Fort MacLeod, Alta.) and Ken Merrill (Sr., North Little Rock) added RBI singles to push UAM’s lead to 7-0. At that point, all UAM’s runs were unearned.

UAM added their final run in the sixth inning as Merrill hit a sacrifice fly to give the Weevils an 8-0 lead.

UAM starter Nick Yarbrough (Jr., Star City, Ark.) picked up his first win of the year (1-0) after throwing three scoreless innings. Tyler Price (Frosh., Maurice, La.) tossed three scoreless innings in relief and Jarrett Chasse (Jr., Invermere, B.C.) tossed a hitless seventh inning.

UAPB scored their first and only run of the day in the top of the first inning of the day’s finale, and the Weevils would more than respond in the bottom of the inning, tying the game on an RBI grounder and taking the lead on an RBI single by Jay Livingston (Sr., Regina, Sask.) and pushing ahead to 3-1 after an RBI single by Kathrein.

The Weevils added a run in the fourth inning on an RBI double by Tillsley to extend their lead to 4-1.

Tex Webster (Jr., Hobbs, N.M.) picked up his second win of the season (2-0) after throwing two innings. Dillon Reynolds (Jr., Langley, B.C.), John Carroll (Frosh., El Dorado) and Trevon Johnson (Frosh., DeWitt) held the Golden Lions scoreless from the third inning on.

The Weevils return to action Feb. 18 as part of the 2006 University of Montevallo Baseball Tournament in Montevallo, Ala., facing St. Joseph’s at 9 a.m. and Kentucky Wesleyan at 3 p.m.

Weevils Improve to 9-0 with Second Straight Win over D-I Nicholls State

THIBODAUX, LA --- Tillsley had a 3-for-5 day at the plate with four RBI and Tornberg went 4-for-5 as the Boll Weevils remained perfect, improving to 9-0 with a 6-4 win over the Southland Conference's Nicholls State Colonels Feb. 12 at Ray E. Didier Field.

The Colonels seemed to have rebounded from UAM's Saturday offensive explosion in the early going, as the Colonels scored four runs on three hits in the second inning to take an early 4-0 lead.

UAM responded in the very next inning, as Tillsley drove in his first run with an RBI single to center to score Ryan Pilcher (Soph., West Monroe, La.), cutting the Nicholls State lead to 4-1. UAM cut the deficit to 4-3 in the top of the sixth after Pilcher and Tornberg both hit two-out RBI singles.

In the eighth inning, Tillsley came to the plate once again, this time with the bases loaded and one out, and knocked a bases-clearing double to give the Weevils a 6-4 advantage going into the bottom of the eighth, and Chasse entered the game in the bottom of the inning, holding the Colonels scoreless down the stretch to pick up his second save of the season.

Reynolds picked up his second win (2-0) after hurling a perfect inning in relief of starter Daniel Howard (Jr., Las Vegas, Nev.), who scattered six hits over six innings, allowing four runs, three earned, and fanning three.

Weevils Drub D-I Nicholls State

THIBODAUX, LA --- Aaron Cotter (Sr., South Slocan, B.C.) scattered five hits over seven innings to improve to 2-0 on the season as the Boll Weevils drubbed the Southland Conference’s Nicholls State Colonels Feb. 11 at Ray E. Didier Field.

Livingston opened scoring for the Weevils in the first inning with a two-out, RBI single to score Tornberg. Kathrein followed immediately with another single to score Livingston and Ellis to give UAM a 3-0 lead after one.

In the second inning, the Weevils chased NSU starter Marcus Markray after an RBI single by Tillsley, giving the Weevils a 4-0 lead.

The Colonels cut the UAM lead to 4-1 in the third inning as Brandt Boudreaux hit an RBI single to center, but the Weevils added two more runs in the sixth inning after an RBI single by Pilcher and an error, pushing ahead 6-1.

The Colonels scored their second run of the game in the bottom of the sixth on a sacrifice fly, but the Weevils added two more in the seventh on a pair of errors to extend their lead to 8-2.

After Nicholls State pulled to within 8-3 in the bottom of the eighth inning on a Jose Higuera RBI single, the Weevils added three insurance runs in the top of the ninth after an error and RBI singles by Pilcher and Tornberg.

Tex Webster entered the game in relief in the eighth inning, allowing two hits and one run while fanning three.

Pilcher and Kathrein both picked up two RBI in the win, while the two joined Tillsley and Livingston with two hits apiece. Ellis and Josh Mace (Jr., Nelson, B.C.) both scored two runs in the winning effort.
