Greek Speak |

Lori Andrews
Staff Writer
OK, so last week I told you about the organization of
the Greek organization as a whole. This week, I'm going
to tell you a little about the community service
projects of the sorority Alpha Sigma Alpha and the
fraternity Alpha Phi Alpha.
The Gamma Zeta Chapter of Alpha Sigma Alpha participates in the
Special Olympics and the S. June Smith Center. Every
year, Special Olympics are held at the University of Arkansas
at Monticello and they are
eager to help and give support to the participants. They
find this the most rewarding of all their community
service projects because they can see the smile on the
participants faces of someone who cares about them. Each
member is required to participate in a minimum of 50
hours a semester in community service. The chapter
participates in not only Special Olympics, but they are
also mentors to the community, participate in the
Adopt-A-Highway program and various campus service
projects. The ladies of Alpha Sigma Alpha portray an
image of balance between social, intellectual, physical
and spiritual values.
The Pi Psi Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. participates
in a number of community service projects in the area.
They are a part of the "Big Brother Program," "Go to
High School, Go to College," "Project Alpha" and "A Voteless People is A Hopeless People." The Big Brother
Program is where the brothers are mentors to the young
men in the area. “Go to High School, Go to College” is a
program that concentrates on the importance of
completing secondary and collegiate education in the
road to advancement. Project Alpha is designed to
provide education, motivation and skill-building on
issues of responsibility, relationships, teen pregnancy
and sexually transmitted diseases for young males ages
12-15 years.
The brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. find the "Go to
High School, Go to College" the most fulfilling because
it reaches out to a wide range of audiences and allows
freedom of creativity for the presentations. The
brothers spend 200 to 400 hours of community service
every year. They try to portray an image of
distinguished gentlemen focusing on community service
and academic achievement. The Alphas are proud to say
that they have achieved the highest grade point average
in the state. They have placed nationally as a step
team. They are very active in the activities on campus.
Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. will be hosting a St. Valentine’s
Ball Feb. 14. They will also be hosting an Alpha
week later in the semester.
Also happening next week will be the Sigma Tau Gamma Toga Twister
Party. The brothers of Sigma Tau Gamma hosted a Mardi
Gras Party last week and went over very well with buzz
of campus involvement.
Again, if you have any
questions about any Greek organization on campus feel
free to see Robin Barker, director of Student Programs
and Activities, in the Gibson University Center.
