Blossoms Fall to Lady Statesmen

The University of Arkansas at Monticello Cotton Blossoms (10-12, 5-6) were unable to muster any sustained offense against the No. 10 Delta State Lady Statesmen, falling 61-50 Feb. 9 at Steelman Fieldhouse.

DSU charged ahead in the early going, taking a five-point lead (12-7) after a layup by Renita Jones. The Blossoms responded by tying the game (14-14) seven minutes later, as Wendy Young (Sr., Chapmans, St. Vincent) hit a jumper with 6:41 remaining in the opening half.

However, DSU never allowed the Cotton Blossoms to push ahead and the Lady Statesmen went into the half ahead by two (23-21).

UAM finally jumped ahead in the early going in the second half, as Teokea Wilkerson broke apart a tie game with a free throw to give UAM a one-point lead (26-25) with 16:44 left. Then the Lady Statesmen went on a 15-6 run to push ahead by 41-31 at the 10:00 mark, and DSU never looked back.

Katrina Dean (Sr., Conway, Ark.) and Sherelle Shipp (Jr., Wilmar, Ark.) led the Blossoms with 12 points each. DSU's Jones posted a game-high 15 points and 11 rebounds.

DSU held a 45-29 rebounding advantage on the night.

The Cotton Blossoms return to action Monday, Feb. 13, as they host Central Baptist in a non-conference matchup. Tip-off from Steelman Fieldhouse is set for 7 p.m.

Blossoms fall to Harding

SEARCY --- Despite placing four players in double figures, the Cotton Blossoms could not overcome a 34-point night from Harding’s Jasmine McClindon, falling 75-64 Feb. 7 at Rhodes Field House.

Harding opened the contest on an 11-2 run over the first 4:05 of the contest to take an early nine-point lead, but the Cotton Blossoms responded with a 21-2 run to take a 23-13 lead with 4:52 remaining in the half. Harding narrowed the gap to three (27-24) after a layup with 1:12 left, but TeAundra Harden (Jr., Monticello, Ark.) hit a three pointer on the next possession to send the Blossoms into the half with a six-point (30-24) lead.

The Lady Bisons scored the first 10 points of the second half to take a four-point (34-30) lead, and the two teams began a back-and-forth struggle that saw the lead change 10 times in the second half. UAM pushed back ahead, taking a four-point (51-47) lead after a three-pointer by Theresa Tran (Sr., Mesquite, Texas), but the Lady Bisons clawed back, pushing their lead to 66-56 with 2:43 remaining. The Blossoms did not recover.

McClindon’s 34 points led all scorers, while Harden’s 15 points led the Blossoms. Dean, Jenna Thomas (Sr., Shreveport, La.) and Abra Motley (Sr., Muskegon, Mich.) also scored in double figures, scoring 12, 11 and 10 points respectively.
