Diamond Weevils Rout Bisons

Paul Smith
Sports Information Director

SEARCY --- The University of Arkansas--Monticello Boll Weevils (7-0) took advantage of 12 hits and 11 walks as the Weevils routed Harding 16-4 in a non-conference baseball match-up Feb. 7 at Jerry Moore Field. The game ended after seven innings due to the 10-run rule.

The Weevils struck first in the top of the first inning, as Ken Merrill (Sr., North Little Rock, Ark.) hit an RBI single through the left side to give the Weevils an early 1-0 lead. With two outs and the bases loaded, Harding starter Jordan Blank drilled catcher Enrique Odreman (Jr., Caracas, Venezuela) to score the inning’s second run. The Weevils added another run on a wild pitch.

Harding cut the UAM lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the inning and took a 4-3 lead after the third inning on three consecutive RBI hits.

UAM’s offense exploded over the next three innings, combining for 13 runs to push their lead to 16-4, the game’s final margin.

John Carroll (Fr., El Dorado, Ark.) picked up the win for the Boll Weevils after allowing four runs, three earned, in four innings. Tyler Price (Fr., Maurice, La.) added two shutout innings of relief and Nick Yarbrough (Jr., Star City, Ark.) pitched a scoreless seventh inning.

The Weevils return to action Saturday, Feb. 11, as they travel to Thibodeaux, La., for a two-game set with the Nicholls State Colonels at Ray E. Didier Field. Saturday's first pitch starts at 3 p.m., with Sunday’s game starting at 1 p.m.
