Weevils Survive Reddies Late Surge

Despite a late rally by the Henderson State University Reddies that saw HSU erase a nine-point halftime lead, The University of Arkansas at Monticello Boll Weevils held off the Reddies, winning a 56-54 thriller Feb. 2 at Steelman Fieldhouse.

UAM (14-7, 7-3 GSC) dominated during the first half, pushing their lead to 14 (23-9) with 8:36 remaining in the first half. The Reddies chipped away at the lead, eventually pulling to within eight (26-16) just four minutes later; going into the half behind by just nine.

In the opening minutes of the second half, the Reddies chipped away at the Weevil lead but were unable to get ahead. However, with 3:04 remaining in the contest, HSU drained a pair of free throws to take a one-point (48-47) lead.

The Reddies took their last lead of the contest with 1:04 remaining, but Billy McDaniel (Sr., Hearne, Texas) hit a layup with 1:02 left and the Weevils never trailed again, holding the Reddies at bay the remainder of the way.

J.B. Williams (Jr., Compton, Calif.) scored 18 points to lead the Weevils, while Nate Newell (Jr., Monticello, Ark.) scored 17. McDaniel grabbed 11 boards to lead UAM.

HSU’s Kelvin Brown led all scorers with 26 points.

The Weevils return to action Monday, Feb. 6, traveling to Searcy to face Harding at Rhodes Field House. An 8 p.m. tip-off is scheduled.

Weevils Win Third Straight, Down Wonder Boys

RUSSELLVILLE --- McDaniel scored 21 points, leading a cast of four Boll Weevils scoring in double figures as the Weevils downed the Arkansas Tech Wonder Boys 74-64 Jan. 30 at Tucker Coliseum.

Arkansas Tech has now lost seven straight games.

The Boll Weevils took charge early, pushing ahead by nine (19-10) after a McDaniel three-pointer with 11:59 remaining in the opening half, however, the Wonder Boys charged back with a 10-0 run to take the lead after a Justin Foster layup just four minutes later.

The Weevils reclaimed the lead briefly, but the Wonder Boys went back on top after a Denarryl Rice layup with 4:28 remaining, and ATU extended their lead to eight (40-32) at the half.

As the second half opened, the Wonder Boys pulled ahead by 14 (46-32) with 18:26 remaining. However, UAM responded with a 17-3 run to tie the game at 49 after a DeMarcus Wilson (Sr., Lancaster, Texas) layup with 11:07 remaining.

The two teams swapped leads over the next few minutes, but Wilson drained a three with 4:22 remaining to put the Weevils ahead (63-60) and UAM never trailed again, extending their final lead to ten with eight seconds left after a Newell free-throw.

McDaniel’s 21 points led all players. Newell added 14, and Wilson and Brandon Mayweather (Sr., Crossett, Ark.) both scored 12 points. Mayweather also snagged a game-high 10 rebounds.

With losses by both Central Arkansas (to Christian Brothers) and Henderson State (to Delta State), the win gives UAM sole possession of second place in the Gulf South Conference-West Division, one full game ahead of UCA, HSU, and CBU, who are all tied for third place.

Weevils Hold off Tigers

ARKADELPHIA --- Boosted by a 19-point, 10-rebound effort from Williams, the Boll Weevils held off the Ouachita Baptist University Tigers, winning 66-60 Jan. 28 at Vining Arena.

The win snapped a four-season losing streak for the Boll Weevils in Arkadelphia.

Newell opened scoring with a three-pointer just over 20 seconds into the contest, jump-starting the Weevils on a 7-0 game-opening run. Ouachita responded with a 7-0 run of their own to tie the contest with 14:27 remaining in the opening half, but the Weevils surged ahead again, pushing their lead to six (16-10) just two minutes later.

Ouachita pulled to within two (20-18) after a three by Brian Ross, but the Weevils once again surged ahead, pulling ahead by ten (32-22) after a pair of free throws by Wilson. OBU was able to fight back, narrowing the UAM lead to seven (36-29) at the half.

The Tigers opened the second half on an 11-2 run, tying the game (40-40) on a dunk by Jaranimo Marks with 15:04 left to play, but the Weevils responded as Williams drained a three on the next possession, keying a surge that saw the Weevils jump ahead by nine (60-51) with 4:00 left to play.

OBU narrowed the deficit to three (63-60) after a three-pointer by Brian Ross with 24 seconds remaining, but the Weevils were able to hold the Tigers scoreless the remainder of the way and seize the victory.

Williams’ 18 points and 10 rebounds were both game highs. Newell added 15 points, while Mayweather and McDaniel added 14 and 13 points, respectively.
