Blossoms Fall to Lady Reddies
Despite a 17-point effort from Wendy Young (Sr., Chapmans, St.
Vincent), the University of Arkansas at Monticello Cotton Blossoms (10-10, 5-5
GSC) dropped a 68-60 heartbreaker to the Henderson State Lady Reddies Feb. 2 at
Steelman Fieldhouse.
The Blossoms led early, taking a 6-2 lead after a free throw by
Jenna Thomas (Sr., Shreveport, La.) but the Lady Reddies went on a 22-5 run to
take a 14-point (25-11) lead with 10:04 remaining. UAM chipped away at the HSU
lead, pulling to within four (29-25) after a Young lay-up with 2:06 remaining,
but the Lady Reddies pushed their lead back to eight (33-25) at the half.
As the second half opened, it was all Henderson State as the Lady
Reddies extended their lead to as many as 21 (50-29) before the Blossoms began a
furious charge, pulling back to within eight as time expired.
Young’s 17 points and 8 rebounds led the Blossoms, while Henderson
State placed three players in double figures, led by Shondra Bush with 28
points.
HSU held a 52-34 rebounding advantage for the game.
The Cotton Blossoms return to action Monday, Feb. 6, as they travel
to Searcy to face Harding at Rhodes Field House. A 6 p.m. tip-off is scheduled.
Blossoms Win Third Straight, Knock Off Golden Suns
RUSSELLVILLE --- The Cotton Blossoms took advantage of 24 Arkansas Tech
Golden Suns turnovers to win their third straight game, a 59-54 victory Jan. 30
over the Arkansas Tech Golden Suns in Russellville.
The Golden Suns opened the game hot, taking a 13-6 lead with 11:20
left in the opening half. The Cotton Blossoms were able to pull to within one
(13-12) after a layup by TeAundra Harden (Jr., Monticello, Ark.) with 8:34
remaining. However, the Golden Suns seized the momentum, pulling back ahead by
as many as ten (25-15) with 3:07 remaining.
The Cotton Blossoms would not go down without a fight in the second
half, pulling to within five (28-23) at the half after a Thomas jumper.
Arkansas Tech took charge in the first five minutes of the second
half, extending their lead to 11 (36-25) with 15:58 remaining. However, the
Cotton Blossoms responded with a 12-0 run, capped by a Theresa Tran (Sr.,
Mesquite, Texas) three-pointer with 11:16 left in the second half to take a
one-point (37-36) lead.
The Cotton Blossoms pushed ahead, taking a seven-point lead (53-46)
with 1:46 remaining in the contest, and UAM was able to hold the Golden Suns at
arm's length down the stretch.
Young led the Blossoms with 12 points, while Thomas added 10
points. Tran and Gemma Gibson (So., Dodd City, Texas) added nine points apiece.
ATU's Amanda Grappe posted game-highs in points (21) and rebounds (11).
The win is UAM's fourth consecutive win over the Golden Suns, the
longest winning streak since the Blossoms won four straight over ATU from
1994-96. Additionally, with the win head coach Bob Boldon picked up his 25th
career win, moving past Jill Lewis (2002-04) into third place for career wins in
the UAM coaching record book. Young, Motley Lead Blossoms Past Ouachita
ARKADELPHIA --- Young scored 25 points and Abra Motley (Sr., Muskegon, Mich.)
added 19 points as the Cotton Blossoms rolled to an 81-65 victory over the
Ouachita Baptist University Lady Tigers Jan. 28 at Vining Arena.
UAM led throughout most of the first half, extending their lead to
eight (23-15) after a layup by Shenai Limbrick (Jr., Houston, Texas). The Lady
Tigers narrowed the gap down the stretch, pulling to within three (34-31) with
34 seconds left into the half.
The second half was all UAM, as the Blossoms shot 54.8 percent
(17-of-31) from the floor.
UAM opened the half on a 9-2 run, pulling ahead by ten (33-43) the
Blossoms would charge ahead by as many as 13 (55-42) with 12:13 left, before the
Lady Tigers staged a brief rally, pulling to within seven (59-52) with 8:34
remaining in the second half. However, the Blossoms pushed back ahead and
finished the game with ahead by 16, their biggest lead of the night.
Young and Motley were the only Blossoms in double figures, while Lindsey Dooley
led the Lady Tigers with 16 points. The Blossoms held a 40-28 rebounding
advantage including a 17-9 advantage on the offensive glass; and blocked five
OBU shots on the night.
