Weevils Stop Buccaneers
Brandon Mayweather (Sr., Crossett, Ark.) scored a
career-high 23 points alongside 11 rebounds as the University of
Arkansas at Monticello Boll Weevils (11-7, 4-3 GSC) captured a 71-66
victory over the Christian Brothers University Buccaneers Jan. 26 at
Steelman Fieldhouse.
The back-and-forth contest featured nine lead changes and 11 ties.
Neither team was able to gain much of an advantage over the first 10
minutes, as the teams were tied (21-21) with 9:15 remaining.
However, the Weevils finished the half with an 11-6 swing to go into
the intermission ahead 32-27.
Christian Brothers whittled away at the UAM lead over the first
five minutes of the second half, finally taking a lead (46-44) after
a Kevin Weybright layup with 13:35 remaining. However, DeMarcus
Wilson (Sr., Lancaster, Texas) hit a three with 9:32 remaining to
break a 49-49 tie and the Weevils would never trail again.
Weybright led all scorers with 24 points. Mayweather’s 23 led the
Weevils, while Billy McDaniel (Sr., Hearne, Texas) scored 19 points
in the winning effort. J.B. Williams (Jr., Compton, Calif.) also
scored 14 points.
UAM returns to action Saturday, Jan. 28, facing Ouachita Baptist at
Vining Arena in Arkadelphia. A 5 p.m. tip-off is scheduled.
Weevils Drop Heartbreaker to Central Arkansas
CONWAY -- Down 54-52 with 3.6 seconds to play, the Boll Weevils were only able to convert one of two free throws as
they fell to the University of Central Arkansas Bears 54-53 Jan. 23 at the
Farris Center in Conway.
The Weevils took the momentum early, pushing ahead to a nine-point
(18-9) lead after a trio of free throws by Wilson. However, the Bears fought back to take the lead (25-24) with 4:10
remaining in the opening half, pushing ahead by as many as seven (31-24) before
the Weevils narrowed the gap to five after a pair of freebies by Williams
with 47 seconds remaining.
UAM shot 25 percent in the first half on 7-of-28 shooting while UCA
shot 41.7 percent on 10-of-24 shooting.
The Bears seemed poised to put the Weevils away, extending their
lead to 11 (46-35) with 10:02 remaining, but the Weevils clawed back, pulling to
within two with 2:02 remaining, but the Weevils were unable to edge any closer
until there were 3.6 seconds left, when Williams split a pair of free throws
sealing the UCA victory.
McDaniel hit a pair of free throws at
the 7:25 mark of the second half to score his 1,770th and 1,771th career points,
passing UAM Hall of Famer Ikie Corbin for second on UAM's all-time scoring list.
