Spanish Experience |

Nancy Stephan
Staff Writer
Students serious about learning Spanish, who want to learn quickly,
efficiently and professionally, can take advantage of a program offered by the
University of Arkansas at Monticello that provides the opportunity to study
in the enchanting country of Costa Rica.
Under the direction of Spanish instructor Isabel Bacon, students
can earn up to nine hours credit during the 2006 Summer Session in San Jose,
Costa Rica.
In addition to the four hours of classroom studies divided between
grammar and conversation, students experience the Spanish culture by living with
a Costa Rican family for a month and interacting with them on a daily basis.
There is no better way to learn to speak Spanish than to live it.
Offered from one week to three months, the program allows students
to progress at their own pace with classes limited in size to six students.
Bacon assures participants that plenty of recreational
activities exist. The town offers tourists three museums, concerts,
arts and crafts, and a large shopping center, which includes a cinema, all
within walking distance. Students find most restaurants and night clubs provide them with a
very pleasant atmosphere where they can relax and mingle with other students and
residents of Costa Rica.
"It is a very safe country," Bacon said. "The most
dangerous thing you have to be concerned with is the traffic."
The
$1,885
cost for the trip includes tuition, room and board, and
two meals a day (airfare not included). Students can enjoy eating at several
familiar restaurants such as McDonald’s and KFC, but may also experience the
authentic cuisine offered at many Costa Rican restaurants.
Several weekend field trips are included with the package and many
more excursions are available at additional costs. The tour and excursion
program allows visitors to experience some of the most enchanting and exotic
places in the world (IPEE.com).
Students interested in
this program can contact Bacon at baconi@uamont.edu for registration
information.
