Blossoms Snap Three-Game Skid, Top Lady Bucs

Jenna Thomas (Sr., Shreveport, La.) led a trio of University of Arkansas at Monticello Cotton Blossoms (8-9, 3-4 GSC) in double figures with 14 points as the Blossoms downed the Christian Brothers Lady Buccaneers (9-8, 2-5 GSC) 62-51 Jan. 26 at Steelman Fieldhouse.

CBU looked to have the game well in hand early, taking an 18-9 lead with 9:17 remaining in the opening half, but the Blossoms finished the half on a 15-1 run to go into the half ahead 24-19.

UAM took control over the first five minutes of the second half, pushing ahead by as many as 14 (36-22) on a jumper by Abra Motley (Sr., Muskegon, Mich.) with 15:19 remaining. The Lady Bucs narrowed the gap to six, but the Blossoms were able to put the Lady Bucs away down the stretch as UAM converted all six free throws in the last two minutes.

Thomas’ 14 points led the Blossoms. Motley added 13 points, while Gemma Gibson (So., Dodd City, Texas) scored 12 points. CBU’s Crystal Shelton had 18 points to lead all scorers.

The Cotton Blossoms return to action Saturday, Jan. 28, facing Ouachita Baptist University at Vining Arena in Arkadelphia. A 3 p.m. tip-off is scheduled.

Blossoms Fall to Sugarbears

CONWAY --  Despite a 19-point, 9-rebound effort from Wendy Young (Sr., Champans, St. Vincent), the Cotton Blossoms were unable to contend with the hot-shooting Central Arkansas Sugarbears, falling 76-57 Jan. 23 at the Farris Center in Conway.

The Blossoms and Sugarbears went back and forth over the first seven minutes, but UCA broke open a tie game with a Renita Dobbins lay-up with 12:48 remaining, and UCA started a 20-5 run to take a 30-15 lead with 4:38 remaining in the half.

UAM pulled to within ten (53-43) on a Young lay-up with 10:04 remaining, but the Sugarbears went on a 14-0 run over the next four minutes to push their lead to 24 and UCA never looked back, shooting 57.6 percent (19-of-33) in the second half.

Young's 19 points led all scorers. UCA's Caronica Randle led the Sugarbears with 17 points.

Young also had nine boards to lead all players, but the Sugarbears held a 49-37 rebounding advantage. The two teams combined for 50 turnovers.
