Four students and one coach from the University of Arkansas at Monticello debate team will be part of the 2006 U.S. Montgomery Cup team that will tour England and Scotland Feb. 22 through March 10.

The U.S. team will take part in international debate competition with students from some of the top universities in the United Kingdom. This year's tour includes stops in London, Edinburgh, St. Andrews, Aberdeen, Dundee, Inverness and Glasgow.

Scott Kuttenkuler, UAM debate coach and a former Montgomery Cup champion, will accompany the following UAM students on the tour: Matt Baumgarten, a senior criminal justice major from Monticello; Brian Rauls, a sophomore speech major from Bearden; Brooke Flemister, a sophomore general studies major from Monticello; and Joel Brown, a sophomore nursing major from Monticello.

The Montgomery Cup Exhibition Tour was instituted in 1993 by the English Speaking Debate Unions of England, Scotland and Wales. The tour is a competitive, academic and international exchange between outstanding debate students from the United States and Great Britain.

Kuttenkuler said the university's tradition of excellence, success in public debate tournaments sponsored by the International Public Debate Association, and leadership in Pi Kappa Delta, the national honor society for debate and competitive speaking students, led to the student's selection.

"As a former participant of this program, I can speak from personal experience that this trip will make a dramatic impact on the lives of those who are selected," he said. "For each of this year's team this will be their first overseas travel and their first exposure to international debate.”
