Media Services Enhancing the understanding of Hispanic culture and helping Hispanic children improve their English are the purposes of a grant to be administered by University of Arkansas at Monticello Spanish Instructor Isabel Bacon. The $6,141 grant was awarded to Bacon through the Monticello First United Methodist Church. It is being funded by the Arkansas Humanities Council and the National Endowment for the Humanities and is part of the NEH project entitled "Building Up Community Through the Humanities." Bacon will be assisted by UAM students who will serve as instructors. Students involved in the project include Katie Meier, a junior English major from Monticello; Gaudencio Arce, a sophomore business administration major from Hermitage; Misty Lyle, a junior history major from Monticello; Lydia Meier, a senior speech major from Monticello; Rhonda Norman, a first-year general studies major from Hamburg; and Sarah Reed, a junior English major from McKinney, Texas. The first event of the project will take place Dec. 15 when Bacon and her students host a "Reading Fiesta" from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Monticello Public Library. Children in the community will be invited to attend and learn Spanish words associated with Christmas, make traditional Mexican ornaments and have a taste of "Tchocolath," the sacred drink of the Aztecs.
"Hopefully we can enhance the understanding of Hispanic culture and language among the residents of Monticello and also help children with limited English proficiency increase their mastery of English," Bacon said.
