Choir Performs to Packed House

Katy Murray
Managing Editor

The University of Arkansas – Monticello concert choir presented its annual fall concert to a packed house Dec. 6 at 7:30 p.m. in the UAM Fine Arts Center auditorium.

Under the artful direction of Kent Skinner, the choir performed with a thoughtful excellence that can only be described as being touched by the spirit of Christmas. They offered a variety of 10 works to the audience, including Bach's "Alleluia," spirituals arranged by Jester Hairston and Robert DeCormier, and "Hallelujah" by Beethoven.

Their excellence peaked with the shining performance of featured work "Regina Coeli" by Mozart, however. Soprano Tracy Sutherland, alto Amanda Kilcrease, tenor Rayburn Ezell and bass Jim Reeves were allowed to dazzle in this piece. They delivered a musical contribution that complimented the choir as a whole.

Other soloists featured during the concert were tenor Jermaine Smiley in "Let Me Fly" and alto Karen Merritt in "Mary's Little Boy Chile (Calypso Christmas)," who also did an excellent job. Pianist Paul Becker of the UAM music department accompanied the choir and enriched the performances with his music.

A high difficulty level existed with many of the various works performed, but the choir really gave it their all. They succeeded in a masterful presentation of all the pieces. The concert brought applause at every juncture and evoked a standing ovation upon the finale of seasonal arrangement "Deck The Halls."

Students, faculty and staff not able to attend missed a real opportunity to enjoy the concert. The choir's performance proved their value to the audience and should be given praise for their accomplishment.
