Dec. 11 - The SEARK Concert Association brings the Pine Bluff Symphony Orchestra to the Fine Arts Center auditorium at 3 p.m. Admission will be charged, but UAM students enter free with campus I.D. and complimentary advance ticket. For reservations, call 460-1060.

Jan. 3 - Admission deadline for new students, transfer students and former UAM students. Only students completing the admission process by this date will be assured the opportunity to participate in registration on Tuesday, Jan. 10.

Jan. 3 - Deadline for pre-registered students to pay or make arrangements to pay tuition, fees, and room and board. Even students whose bill is $0 or less must validate their registration with a cashier at one of the three campus locations. This includes students who receive scholarships and other forms of financial aid.

Jan. 9 - Students who've paid tuition and fees by deadline can make schedule changes between 8:30 a.m. and noon at the Monticello location; between 9 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. at the Crossett location; and between 8 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. at the McGehee location.

Jan. 9 - Orientation for new freshmen and transfer students:
Monticello campus - Events will be held in the Fine Arts Center. Students will receive details and scheduled orientation times by mail.
McGehee campus - Orientation for McGehee technical students will begin at 12:30 p.m. in the Student Services Center.

Jan. 9 - Registration for night-only students and graduate students from 5 to 7 p.m. at Monticello (Harris Hall), Crossett and McGehee.

Jan. 10 - Open registration from 8:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. at each campus location.

Jan. 11 - Classes begin Wednesday.

Jan. 11-18 - Students can make schedule changes. Students registering at this time will be assessed a $25 late registration fee.

Emerald Huggins

Emerald Huggins of Grady, a freshman nursing major at the University of Arkansas at Monticello, received a Gates Millennium Scholarship, becoming the university's first recipient. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation created the Gates Millennium Scholar Program to provide scholarships to academically talented, low-income minorities. Scholarship recipients may pursue an undergraduate degree in any academic discipline. Continuing GMS Scholars may request funding for graduate degree programs in areas in which their racial and ethnic groups are underrepresented. Since 1999, 9,050 students have been awarded a GMS Scholarship.

Brittany Washington won the title of 2005 Miss Black & Gold, while Courtney Levingston took first runner-up (Miss Black) and Adelia Hill took second runner-up (Miss Gold). The Pi Psi Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. acknowledges its appreciation to all the lovely ladies who participated in the this year's Miss Black & Gold Pageant.

Jennifer Schuler accepted the post of Registrar’s Assistant, which was vacated recently when Brenda Woodard moved to the Assistant Registrar position. Schuler has a bachelor’s degree from East Carolina University. Prior to coming to the Monticello area in August with her husband Jamie, who is a new assistant professor in Forest Resources, Schuler performed recordkeeping and accounting functions in a position with North Carolina State University.

   Come to the tutoring center on the second floor of Harris Hall. While Residence Hall Night Tutoring will continue during finals week, the center hours are listed below:

Dec. 16 - University Center locker rentals expire at 4 p.m.

Walk, jog or run your way to a GREAT STUDENT (FACULTY/STAFF) BODY and earn a FREE T-shirt! Walk, jog or run 50, 75 or 100 miles by the end of the Fall semester and be well on your way to having a physically fit, "GREAT" Student Body. Participation is open to all current UAM students, faculty and staff. Mileage must be completed by Dec. 16. Miles completed on treadmills, stairmaster, etc. count toward total miles. (Athletes may NOT count miles completed as part of their practice.) Sign up in the Intramural Office (lower level - University Center). Participants are required to record their weekly mileage on the official chart in the Intramural office.

Meetings

The Student Government Association meets from 12:30-1:30 p.m. in the Gibson University Center Caucus Room on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month. (Jan. 10, Jan. 24) Any student or organization needing an issue brought before SGA should e-mail Robin Barker, director of Student Programs & Activities, at barkerr@uamont.edu to get put on the next meeting's agenda.

The Student Activities Board meets
from 12:30-1:30 p.m. in the UC Caucus Room on the second and fourth Thursdays of each month. (Jan. 12, Jan. 26) Any UAM student can participate in SAB (and attend meetings). For more information, contact Robin Barker, director of Student Programs & Activities, at 460-1396 or

The Alpha Chi Student Honorary conducts regular business meetings for members only during the activity period (12:40 p.m. – 1:30 p.m.) on the second Tuesday of each month. 

Baptist Collegiate Ministries serve lunch Wednesdays at noon. First-timers eat free and everyone else eats for $2. Proceeds benefit summer mission trips and other activities.

Missionary Baptist Student Fellowship meets Thursdays at 7 p.m. at the MBSF Center (near the tennis courts).

The Social Work Club meets the first Wednesday of each month.

DREW COUNTY WRITERS - Drew Country Writers seek new members with a professional attitude and the commitment to publish. Scholarship Opportunities

The AWS Foundation has announced several scholarship opportunities for students studying welding technology, engineering or associated careers. These opportunities exist for both undergraduate and graduate programs. Application deadlines range from Jan. 15 to March 1. Complete details and applications are available at www.aws.org/foundation.

The Morris K. Udall Scholarship program awards 80 $5,000 merit-based scholarships each year to outstanding college students who are Native American or Alaska Native. These students may be majoring in environmental sciences, agriculture, political science, natural resource management, sociology, history, science, business, health, medicine, nursing, economics or any associated field. Additional consideration includes:

  • Current sophomore or juniors;
  • Minimum 3.00 grade point average;
  • U. S. Citizen or permanent resident;
  • Commitment to working with Native Americans after graduation.
  • Meeting the Feb. 1, 2006 submission deadline.

The Arkansas Governor’s Commission on People with Disabilities awards several scholarships each year. Pick up applications in the Office of Admissions on the first floor of Harris Hall. Deadline for application submission is Feb. 27, 2006. Eligibility for consideration includes:

  1. Completed application;
  2. Documented disability, including completed medical form in the application;
  3. Letter of good standing;
  4. Three letters of recommendation;
  5. Official transcript.

The Newhouse Graduate Newspaper Fellowship and Apprenticeship for Minorities underwrites master's level study at the acclaimed S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University while providing on-the-job training at the Newhouse Newspapers. Two winners per year receive free tuition, monthly stipends of $1,100, health insurance coverage and up to $3,300 in other benefits for 18 months of graduate study. To be eligible for the 2006-2008 competition, a candidate must have earned an undergraduate degree from an accredited college or university in a field other than journalism (with a B average or higher) by June 15, 2006, be a United States citizen and either African American, Hispanic/Latino, Asian American/Pacific Islander or Native American. To apply, the candidate must submit a complete application for admission to the newspaper track of Syracuse University's master's program in Magazine, Newspaper and On-Line Journalism by Feb. 1, 2006, which requires taking the Graduate Record Examination no later than Jan. 1, 2006. The $65 Syracuse University graduate application fee will be waived for all eligible Newhouse Fellow candidates. Grades will be posted on Campus Connect for your viewing convenience. You may access Campus Connect by clicking on "Student Information & Links" at the UAM home page.

To receive mailed materials from the university, your permanent mailing address must be accurate.
If you’ve had a change in your address, stop by the Registrar’s Office (Harris Hall, first floor) or the Student Services office at Crossett or McGehee to complete a "Change in Student Data" form. The form should also be completed if you’ve had a change in your name, local address, or telephone number. There is no charge for making a change in your data. A photo ID is required when the "Change in Student Data" form is submitted.

Holiday trash pick-up: Trash will be picked up at 10 a.m. on Dec. 26, Dec. 30 and Jan. 2. All trash should be placed at the edge of the road on the day of pick-up. Do not put trash out the night before. Trash should be in plastic bags and tied at the top. Cardboard boxes can also be put out for pick-up. The schedule returns to normal Jan. 3. Call 460-1018 if you have questions.

Finalize your registration for Spring by Jan. 3, 2006.

  1. Choose Campus Connect from the UAM home page.
  2. Choose New Version of Campus Connect from the Campus Connect page.
  3. Sign in with your student id and pin number. If you do not know your pin number, choose “Help! What’s my Pin?”
  4. From the Student Information option, choose Review/Pay Account.
  5. Choose the current term (Spring).
  6. Your current bill will be displayed. Scroll to the bottom of the page. You will have two of three options:
    • Request contact. If you choose this option you may type in a question and someone from the cashier’s office will contact you with an answer.
    • Finalize Bill Now. This option allows you to finalize your bill ONLY if you have a credit balance. If you choose this option you will NOT need to mail, fax or come to the cashier’s office to sign your bill.
    • Pay by FACTS. This option allows you to finalize your bill by making a payment arrangement or paying in full. If you choose this option you will NOT need to mail, fax or come to the cashier’s office to sign your bill.

Spring break dates listed in the UAM Catalog 2005-07 for spring 2006 and spring 2007 have been corrected in the online catalog to reflect the following: spring 2006, March 20-24 and spring 2007, March 19-23.

UAM COMMENCEMENT - Commencement will be held May 12, 2006 at 10 a.m. at Convoy Leslie Cotton Boll Stadium. In case of inclement weather, commencement will move to Steelman Fieldhouse.
