Dec. 1-3 - The University of Arkansas at Monticello debate team competes
at Cameron University in Lawton, Okla. Dec. 5 - Stop by the Gibson University Center Green Room from 10:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. and pick up a free Exam Kit, filled with scantrons, bluebooks, pencils and other goodies to help you get through finals! Dec. 5 - Counseling and Testing services present "Surviving the Emotional Rollercoaster," Monday at 7 p.m. in Horsfall lobby. The winter holiday season brings on many emotions. Gift-giving and family gatherings bring enormous joy to many people. However, the intensity of the holidays can trigger equally potent emotional lows. Join in for Christmas cookies and hot chocolate. Dec. 6 - Deadline to drop a class or withdraw from the University for the fall term. Depending upon the grade assigned by the instructor in a dropped or withdrawn class, a grade of W (if grade is passing) or F (if grade is failing) will be posted to transcripts. Dec. 6 - David Hamlin of ESP-Tulsa presents a demonstration of a new
portal product they are developing in Meeting Room A of the Library on
Tuesday at 9 a.m. Dec. 8 - The Symphonic, Concert and Jazz bands will hold a Christmas
Concert under conductors Gary Meggs and Les Pack at 7:30 p.m. in the Fine
Arts Center. Dec. 11 - The SEARK Concert Association brings the Pine Bluff Symphony Orchestra to the Fine Arts Center auditorium at 3 p.m. Admission will be charged, but UAM students enter free with campus I.D. and complimentary advance ticket. For reservations, call 460-1060. Dec. 12-16 - Final Exams Week Dec. 13 - The Pomeroy Planetarium features "The Christmas Star" Tuesday at 7 p.m. All are welcome and there is no charge for admission. Dec. 16 - University Center locker rentals expire at 4 p.m.
Mary Heady, special collections and reference librarian in the Taylor Library and Technology Center, received certification as an archivist by the Society of American Archivists. According to the SAA, a certified archivist "has met a series of professional standards as defined by the Academy of Certified Archivists" and "maintains control over records of enduring value." Heady joined the UAM library staff in 2004. She holds a Bachelor's of arts degree in English from William Woods University and a Master's degree in library science from the University of Missouri at Columbia.

Dec. 5 - CoRec Wallyball Tournament entries due at 1:30 p.m.; tournament begins
at 6 p.m. Walk, jog or run your way to a GREAT STUDENT (FACULTY/STAFF) BODY and earn a FREE T-shirt! Walk, jog or run 50, 75 or 100 miles by the end of the Fall semester and be well on your way to having a physically fit, "GREAT" Student Body. Participation is open to all current UAM students, faculty and staff. Mileage must be completed by Dec. 16. Miles completed on treadmills, stairmaster, etc. count toward total miles. (Athletes may NOT count miles completed as part of their practice.) Sign up in the Intramural Office (lower level - University Center). Participants are required to record their weekly mileage on the official chart in the Intramural office. Meetings Dec. 6 - The Graduate Faculty will meet at 3:30 p.m.
in MCB 203. Dec. 7 - The UAM Assembly will meet Wednesday at 3:20 p.m. in the Spencer Gallery of the Fine Arts Center. Dec. 8 - The Journalism Club will hold its final meeting of the semester at 3 p.m. in 106 Jeter. The Alpha Chi Student Honorary conducts regular business meetings for members only during the activity period (12:40 p.m. – 1:30 p.m.) on the second Tuesday of each month. Baptist Collegiate Ministries serve lunch Wednesdays at noon. First-timers eat free and everyone else eats for $2. Proceeds benefit summer mission trips and other activities.

Missionary Baptist Student Fellowship meets Thursdays at 7 p.m. at the

DREW COUNTY WRITERS - Drew Country Writers seek new members with a
professional attitude and the commitment to publish. Members must produce
tangible evidence that they write, though they may not have published at this
point. The group meets on the third Thursday each month in the First
Presbyterian Church library at 6:30 p.m. Opportunities Share the joy of reading with the Vera Lloyd Presbyterian Home for Children this holiday season. The School of Arts and Humanities is beginning its second annual book drive. If you would like to contribute, please bring new or nearly new books appropriate for ages 9 to 18 to the Book Tree in the MCB 112. We will also happily accept cash or checks to buy new books for the children. The books will be delivered Dec. 20. Give an hour, save a life! - The Salvation Army Local Service Unit can
use an hour of your time "manning" the bucket and ringing an official
red-and-white bell to raise funds for emergency assistance in Drew County. UAM
student organizations with a service mandate especially are encouraged to call
357-3966 and volunteer to ring the bell. This year's early start responds to
everything being previously spent on hurricane relief. For more information,

Scholarship Opportunities The AWS Foundation has announced several scholarship opportunities for students studying welding technology, engineering or associated careers. These opportunities exist for both undergraduate and graduate programs. Application deadlines range from Jan. 15 to March 1. Complete details and applications are available at www.aws.org/foundation. The Morris K. Udall Scholarship program awards 80 $5,000 merit-based scholarships each year to outstanding college students who are Native American or Alaska Native. The Newhouse Graduate Newspaper Fellowship and Apprenticeship for Minorities underwrites master's level study at the acclaimed S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University while providing on-the-job training at the Newhouse Newspapers. Two winners per year receive free tuition, monthly stipends of $1,100, health insurance coverage and up to $3,300 in other benefits for 18 months of graduate study. To be eligible for the 2006-2008 competition, a candidate must have earned an undergraduate degree from an accredited college or university in a field other than journalism (with a B average or higher) by June 15, 2006, be a United States citizen and either African American, Hispanic/Latino, Asian American/Pacific Islander or Native American. To apply, the candidate must submit a complete application for admission to the newspaper track of Syracuse University's master's program in Magazine, Newspaper and On-Line Journalism by Feb. 1, 2006, which requires taking the Graduate Record Examination no later than Jan. 1, 2006. The $65 Syracuse University graduate application fee will be waived for all eligible Newhouse Fellow candidates.
