Dec. 1-3 - The University of Arkansas at Monticello debate team competes at Cameron University in Lawton, Okla.

Dec. 2 - Delta Sigma Theta will hold a party Friday
from 9:13 p.m.-1 a.m. in the U.C. Gym. Get in for only $3 at the door, or $2 with the donation of a canned good.

Dec. 5 - Stop by the Gibson University Center Green Room from 10:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. and pick up a free Exam Kit, filled with scantrons, bluebooks, pencils and other goodies to help you get through finals!

Dec. 5 - Counseling and Testing services present "Surviving the Emotional Rollercoaster," Monday at 7 p.m. in Horsfall lobby. The winter holiday season brings on many emotions. Gift-giving and family gatherings bring enormous joy to many people. However, the intensity of the holidays can trigger equally potent emotional lows. Join in for Christmas cookies and hot chocolate.

Dec. 6 - Deadline to drop a class or withdraw from the University for the fall term. Depending upon the grade assigned by the instructor in a dropped or withdrawn class, a grade of W (if grade is passing) or F (if grade is failing) will be posted to transcripts.

Dec. 6 - David Hamlin of ESP-Tulsa presents a demonstration of a new portal product they are developing in Meeting Room A of the Library on Tuesday at 9 a.m.

Dec. 6 - The concert choir presents its annual fall concert
at 7:30 p.m. in the Fine Arts Center auditorium.

Dec. 7 - The Assembly meets Wednesday
at 3:20 p.m. in the Spencer Gallery of the Fine Arts Center. Print and read the agenda before going!

Dec. 8 - The Symphonic, Concert and Jazz bands will hold a Christmas Concert under conductors Gary Meggs and Les Pack at 7:30 p.m. in the Fine Arts Center.

Dec. 9 - Last day of classes

Dec. 11 - The SEARK Concert Association brings the Pine Bluff Symphony Orchestra to the Fine Arts Center auditorium at 3 p.m. Admission will be charged, but UAM students enter free with campus I.D. and complimentary advance ticket. For reservations, call 460-1060.

Dec. 12-16 - Final Exams Week

Dec. 13 - The Pomeroy Planetarium features "The Christmas Star" Tuesday at 7 p.m. All are welcome and there is no charge for admission.

Dr. Larry Eustace

Larry Eustace, chair of the division of Nursing, recently completed the requirements to become a certified nursing educator.  The CNE designation is awarded following the successful completion of a rigorous examination administered by the National League of Nursing. Eustace is one of 250 nursing educators nationwide to earn the designation. Eustace joined the UAM faculty as division chair in 2001. He holds a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing from the University of Texas at Austin, a Master's of Science in Nursing from Texas Women’s University, and a Doctorate of Science in Nursing from the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

Mary Heady

Mary Heady, special collections and reference librarian in the Taylor Library and Technology Center, received certification as an archivist by the Society of American Archivists. According to the SAA, a certified archivist "has met a series of professional standards as defined by the Academy of Certified Archivists" and "maintains control over records of enduring value." Heady joined the UAM library staff in 2004. She holds a Bachelor's of arts degree in English from William Woods University and a Master's  degree in library science from the University of Missouri at Columbia.

The Writing Center
   Avoid waiting until the last minute to finish those papers. The Writing Center, located in the Arts and Humanities building, helps UAM students with computer and writing work. The Writing Center tutors will only be available at the times listed during the week of finals:

Walk, jog or run your way to a GREAT STUDENT (FACULTY/STAFF) BODY and earn a FREE T-shirt! Walk, jog or run 50, 75 or 100 miles by the end of the Fall semester and be well on your way to having a physically fit, "GREAT" Student Body. Participation is open to all current UAM students, faculty and staff. Mileage must be completed by Dec. 16. Miles completed on treadmills, stairmaster, etc. count toward total miles. (Athletes may NOT count miles completed as part of their practice.) Sign up in the Intramural Office (lower level - University Center). Participants are required to record their weekly mileage on the official chart in the Intramural office.

Dec. 8 - The Journalism Club will hold its final meeting of the semester at 3 p.m. in 106 Jeter.

The Alpha Chi Student Honorary conducts regular business meetings for members only during the activity period (12:40 p.m. – 1:30 p.m.) on the second Tuesday of each month. 

Baptist Collegiate Ministries serve lunch Wednesdays at noon. First-timers eat free and everyone else eats for $2. Proceeds benefit summer mission trips and other activities.

Opportunities

Share the joy of reading with the Vera Lloyd Presbyterian Home for Children this holiday season. The School of Arts and Humanities is beginning its second annual book drive. If you would like to contribute, please bring new or nearly new books appropriate for ages 9 to 18 to the Book Tree in the MCB 112. We will also happily accept cash or checks to buy new books for the children. The books will be delivered Dec. 20. Give an hour, save a life! - The Salvation Army Local Service Unit can use an hour of your time "manning" the bucket and ringing an official red-and-white bell to raise funds for emergency assistance in Drew County. UAM student organizations with a service mandate especially are encouraged to call 357-3966 and volunteer to ring the bell. This year's early start responds to everything being previously spent on hurricane relief. For more information, contact Linda Webster, professor of Speech Communication, at webster@uamont.edu.

Planning to graduate in August or December 2006? Fill out and submit a graduation application to the Registrar’s Office, 102 Harris Hall, by March 1, 2006. Unsure of when you may be eligible to graduate? See your adviser to review your degree audit. December 2005 and May 2006 graduation applications are still being accepted and should be submitted as soon as possible.

Scholarship Opportunities

The AWS Foundation has announced several scholarship opportunities for students studying welding technology, engineering or associated careers. These opportunities exist for both undergraduate and graduate programs. Application deadlines range from Jan. 15 to March 1. Complete details and applications are available at www.aws.org/foundation.

The Morris K. Udall Scholarship program awards 80 $5,000 merit-based scholarships each year to outstanding college students who are Native American or Alaska Native. These students may be majoring in environmental sciences, agriculture, political science, natural resource management, sociology, history, science, business, health, medicine, nursing, economics or any associated field. Additional consideration includes:

  • Current sophomore or juniors;
  • Minimum 3.00 grade point average;
  • U. S. Citizen or permanent resident;
  • Commitment to working with Native Americans after graduation.
  • Meeting the Feb. 1, 2006 submission deadline.

The Arkansas Governor’s Commission on People with Disabilities awards several scholarships each year. Pick up applications in the Office of Admissions on the first floor of Harris Hall. Deadline for application submission is Feb. 27, 2006. Eligibility for consideration includes:

  1. Completed application;
  2. Documented disability, including completed medical form in the application;
  3. Letter of good standing;
  4. Three letters of recommendation;
  5. Official transcript.

The Newhouse Graduate Newspaper Fellowship and Apprenticeship for Minorities underwrites master's level study at the acclaimed S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University while providing on-the-job training at the Newhouse Newspapers. Two winners per year receive free tuition, monthly stipends of $1,100, health insurance coverage and up to $3,300 in other benefits for 18 months of graduate study. To be eligible for the 2006-2008 competition, a candidate must have earned an undergraduate degree from an accredited college or university in a field other than journalism (with a B average or higher) by June 15, 2006, be a United States citizen and either African American, Hispanic/Latino, Asian American/Pacific Islander or Native American. To apply, the candidate must submit a complete application for admission to the newspaper track of Syracuse University's master's program in Magazine, Newspaper and On-Line Journalism by Feb. 1, 2006, which requires taking the Graduate Record Examination no later than Jan. 1, 2006. The $65 Syracuse University graduate application fee will be waived for all eligible Newhouse Fellow candidates. Grades will be posted on Campus Connect for your viewing convenience. You may access Campus Connect by clicking on "Student Information & Links" at the UAM home page.

To receive mailed materials from the university, your permanent mailing address must be accurate.
If you’ve had a change in your address, stop by the Registrar’s Office (Harris Hall, first floor) or the Student Services office at Crossett or McGehee to complete a "Change in Student Data" form. The form should also be completed if you’ve had a change in your name, local address, or telephone number. There is no charge for making a change in your data. A photo ID is required when the "Change in Student Data" form is submitted.

Finalize your registration for Spring by Jan. 3, 2006.

  1. Choose Campus Connect from the UAM home page.
  2. Choose New Version of Campus Connect from the Campus Connect page.
  3. Sign in with your student id and pin number. If you do not know your pin number, choose “Help! What’s my Pin?”
  4. From the Student Information option, choose Review/Pay Account.
  5. Choose the current term (Spring).
  6. Your current bill will be displayed. Scroll to the bottom of the page. You will have two of three options:
    • Request contact. If you choose this option you may type in a question and someone from the cashier’s office will contact you with an answer.
    • Finalize Bill Now. This option allows you to finalize your bill ONLY if you have a credit balance. If you choose this option you will NOT need to mail, fax or come to the cashier’s office to sign your bill.
    • Pay by FACTS. This option allows you to finalize your bill by making a payment arrangement or paying in full. If you choose this option you will NOT need to mail, fax or come to the cashier’s office to sign your bill.

Spring break dates listed in the UAM Catalog 2005-07 for spring 2006 and spring 2007 have been corrected in the online catalog to reflect the following: spring 2006, March 20-24 and spring 2007, March 19-23.
