Despite a 20-point, 10-rebound performance from Johnathan Holland, a
senior from Los Angeles, Calif., the University of Arkansas at Monticello
Boll Weevils (0-1) dropped a 73-72 heartbreaker to the Arkansas Baptist
Buffaloes at Steelman Fieldhouse.
The Weevils started hot, opening the game on a 10-2 run, but the
Buffaloes fought back, taking an 18-17 lead on a three-pointer by Casey
Garrison with 9:53 remaining in the opening half. The two teams traded
leads down the stretch, and the Buffaloes took a 25-24 lead on a Garrison
jumper and Arkansas Baptist would hold the lead into the half, going into
the break with a 38-31 lead.
The Buffaloes continued to push ahead in the opening minutes of the
second half, going ahead by as many as 13 (50-37) with just under 17
minutes remaining. The Weevils narrowed the lead down to two and retook
the lead on a three pointer by Nate Newell, a junior from Monticello, Ark.
The Weevils pushed their lead to five (66-61) with 4:35 remaining
as DeMarcus Wilson, a senior from Lancaster, Texas, hit a pair of free
throws, but the Buffaloes charged back, taking a lead with 35 seconds left
on a Lonnie Davis three-pointer.
UAM seemed to have the game in hand when Holland hit a jumper with
18 seconds remaining, but the Buffaloes hit a tough jumper with four
seconds remaining to take a one-point lead.
Arkansas Baptist seemed to have the game in hand as Cornelius
Sullivan stole the ball with four tenths of a second remaining and was
fouled. Sullivan missed the first half of the one-and-one, and as he and
UAM’s Brandon Mayweather fell to the floor going for the rebound, Sullivan
was whistled for a reach with two tenths of a second remaining, sending
Mayweather to the line to shoot two.
Needing one point to tie and two to win, Mayweather was unable to
convert either free throw and the Buffaloes escaped with the victory.
Holland led all scorers with 20 points and 10 boards. Newell (14)
and Billy McDaniel a senior from Hearne, Texas, also posted double-digit
numbers in the loss.
The Buffaloes shot 12-of-29 from long range, holding the Weevils to
9-of-23 shooting from three point range.
UAM returns to action Wednesday, Nov. 23, as they travel to Boca
Raton, Fla., to square off against NCAA South Region foe Lynn. Tip-off is
set for 6:30 p.m.
